Miners Drop Saturday Night Match Against #13 Lewis

ROMEOVILLE, IL  --  The Miners went up against their sixth straight nationally ranked team tonight, falling in three sets to the 13th-ranked Lewis Flyers.

Set 1

The Miners fell behind early in the opening set, dropping nine of the first ten points as Lewis' Max Roquet recorded four kills early. Missouri S&T struggled to prevent scoring runs as Lewis pulled away for a 25-9 set 1 victory.

Set 2

S&T settled in during set two, taking the first scoring run of the set with four straight points with Nate Meyer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) recording a pair of kills in those points as the Miners went ahead 6-3. The Flyers responded with a 7-1 run that erased the Miners lead and put the home team up by three. The Miners struggled to put together any runs of their own the remainder of the set, with Lewis adding to their lead with a pair of three point runs to take the set 25-18.

Set 3

The Miners hung with the Flyers at the start of the set, even taking a one point lead off an ace by Meyer at 8-7. Lewis took the next five points though, giving themselves a four point lead. Just like the previous set, the Miners were unable to string points together, allowing the Flyers to quietly expand their lead with small scoring runs and take the final set 25-17.

Notable Performances

  • Meyer: Led the team in kills and digs with 7 apiece
  • Tyler Johnwick (Lombard, IL/Glenbard East): Tied with Meyer for the team lead in kills and led the team in blocks with two solo blocks.

What's Next?

The Miners will head to the QU Invite next week for matches against Quincy, Emmanuel, and Roosevelt.
