Finley Puts up 20, Miners Fall to UMSL

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T Women's Basketball lost to Missouri-St. Louis 61-72 on Saturday afternoon.

The Tritons won the first quarter 15-13 over the Miners. UMSL took an early 3-0 lead, but S&T kept pace and took an 11-9 lead after an Anna Finley (Owensville, MO/Owensville) three-pointer. The Tritons went on a 6-2 run to end the quarter to lead by two points at the break.

UMSL won the second quarter 19-11 to go into halftime with a 34-24 lead. An 8-0 run to start the quarter gave the Tritons a 23-13 lead. The Miners never let the deficit go above 10 points, but the Tritons kept responding to S&T's comeback attempts. Audrey Martinez-Stewart hit a buzzer beater jumper to keep UMSL's 10-point lead.
 
The Miners answered out of halftime as they won the third quarter 19-14. Finley and Addyson Kent (North Vernon, IN/Jennings County) put up two three-pointers in less than a minute to make the score 30-34. Katelynne Roberts (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) cut the UMSL lead to one point with 4:58 left in the quarter. A 6-2 UMSL run brought the lead back to five points as the Tritons led 48-43 with one quarter to go.

In the fourth quarter, UMSL put the Miners away as they won the game 72-61. They took their biggest lead of the day of 14 points with 4:52 left in the quarter. Norah Gum (Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) brought it down to six points with 1:09 left but the Tritons hit free throws at the end of the game to top the Miners.
 
Finley recorded a career-high 20 points with five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Roberts picked up 16 points, seven rebounds and four blocks for the Miners. Gum tallied 14 points and five rebounds, while Kent collected eight points.

S&T shot 36.2% from the field and 28.6% from three-point range. From the free throw line, the Miners went 15-for-16. They recorded 28 points in the paint and 15 points off turnovers. With the loss, the Miners dropped to seventh place in the GLVC.

What's Next

Missouri S&T is set for a three-game road trip this week starting with William Jewell on Jan. 20 at 3 p.m. Later this week, they play Illinois Springfield on Jan. 23 and McKendree on Jan. 25.
