ROLLA, Mo. -- The Miners struck first with a goal in the 21st minute, but gave up a pair of goals in the second half to lose 2-1 to the Statesmen.
S&T looked good at the onset of today's match, taking control and getting several opportunities down the right sideline with Allison Rush. They would eventually take their first lead of the season less than a quarter into the match, when
Jenna Marti (Sammamish, WA/Eastside Catholic) tapped in a rebound off a free kick by
Greycen Erisman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit West) give the Miners a 1-0 lead that they would take into halftime.
The Statesmen looked like a different team coming out of the locker room, passing and retaining possession significantly better than they did in the first half. Delta State tied the match less than five minutes into the half with a header on a corner. The score remained tied until the 72nd minute, when DSU's Yalitza Zepeda subbed into the competition and scored immediately to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.
The Miners had several opportunities in the final 16 minutes of the game, with
Brooke Bendoff (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) getting a pair of breakaway opportunities, but were unable to find the back of the net. Delta State would hang on to win 2-1 as S&T dropped to 0-2.
