ROLLA, Mo. -- Missouri S&T drops to 0-1 after today's match against Pitt State, losing 2-4 to the Gorillas.
The Gorillas took control of the match early, dictating pace and maintaining possession for most of the opening minutes. They kept the Miners in defensive third of the field, earning 5 corner kicks in the first 17 minutes. Halfway through the first, Asia Barcom came out of goal to make a diving save after an unmarked man for Pitt State got possession of the ball at penalty arc.
Pitt State found the back of the net first when pressure off a goalie kick led to McKenna Robinson getting an open look on goal and burying it in the bottom right corner (assist from Adriana Delgado).
After going into half up 1-0, the Gorillas added a second goal 6 minutes into the second half, with River Riley making a quick play in front of the goal after a PSU corner kick (assist Jadyn Newell).
The Miners scored on a corner kick of their own a few minutes later, with the ball ricocheting around in front of the goal before
Ella Kramer (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) was able to sneak it in the bottom left corner for S&T's first goal of the season.
S&T tied the game 6 minutes later, when pressure in the offensive third by
Ava Hoenes (Columbia, MO/Hickman) led to a breakaway opportunity that Hoenes capitalized on with a cross into the bottom right corner to make it 2-2 (assist
Melissa Parker (Chesterfield, MO/Marquette)).
The Gorillas reclaimed the lead with just over 15 minutes left though off a goal by Madison Monson (assist by Dylann Ehegartner), eventually extending their lead to 4-2 before time expired.
Barcom ended the game with 5 saves and Hoenes led the team in shots and shots on goal with 2 of each.
What's Next
The Miners host Delta State on Sunday at noon. The match will be played at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
