Miners Fall in Four to Hawks

QUINCY, Ill.  --  The Miners took the first set in today's match against Quincy and were close in the second and third as well but couldn't pull out a win in today's 3-1 loss to Quincy.

1st Set:
The Miners recorded two aces in the first eight points, from Annie Arand (Washington, MO/St. Francis Borgia) and Isabelle Monaco (O'Fallon, MO/Living Word Christian), taking a 5-3 lead early. The Hawks would close the gap quickly, tying the set at 5-5. There would be another 6 ties in the ensuing points, up to 12-12, at which point S&T went on a three-point run to take a 15-12 lead, prompting a QU timeout.

The Miners would put together another 3-0 run shortly after the timeout, extending their lead to 18-13. The Hawks would not give up the first set quietly though, with a pair of kills from Emma Wijnbergen attributing to a three-point run that cut S&T's lead to two.

Up 20-18, the Miners grabbed three in a row for a 23-18 lead. The Hawks would take four of the next five, with S&T ultimately putting the set away at 25-22.

2nd Set:
The teams matched each other early in the second, with the score being tied four times in the opening eight points. The Miners were the first to take a significant lead in the set, going on a three-point run off kills by Elise Mehaffy (Marion, IA/Marion) and Monaco to make the score 7-4.

Quincy would take the next nine points, for a 13-7 lead before a double block by Mehaffy and Madison Offerman (Herscher, IL/Herscher) broke the run. The Miners cut the deficit to two twice in the set, once at 17-15 and once at 20-18, but the Hawks never gave up the lead and took the set 25-19.

3rd Set:
Quincy carried their momentum into the 3rd set with a 4-0 run at the start. The Miners responded by taking six of the next eight points, with Alina Carrillo (Oviedo, FL/Hagerty) contributing two kills and a service ace in those points, to bring the score to 6-all.

The Hawks would take a lead a few points later, pulling ahead by as many as six before the Miners cut the deficit to one at 21-20. Quincy would score on four of the next five though for a 25-21 victory in the 3rd.

4th Set:
The Miners never gained a foothold in the final set, falling behind by three in the opening five points and never getting closer than that through the remainder of the set as the Hawks won 25-11.

Carrillo led the team in points, kills, and aces with 17.5, 11, and 2, respectively. Defensively, she had 9 digs, a team-high 3 solo blocks, and 3 block assists. Reese Massey (Kansas City, MO/Staley) led the team in digs with 12, while Offerman had the most blocks on the team with 7 (2 solos and 5 assists). Gabrielle Reynolds (Andover, KS/Andover) led the team in attack percentage at .294 with 6 kills and 1 error on 17 attempts, a new career-high for her.
