ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Miners took down the UMSL Tritons 8-2 in their final game of the season, recording six hits.
Tyler Prince (Mexico, MO/Mexico) led the Miners' batting, recording 2 hits and 4 RBIs in 5 at bats.
After starting the game off with a couple of strikeouts,
Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette) got on base with a HBP and scored during the next at bat off a double by
Tyler Prince (Mexico, MO/Mexico). The Miners went on to add one run in each of the next three innings with RBIs from
Logan Alexander (Olathe, KS/Olathe Northwest), Weiner, and
Denton Damgaard (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain HS); Weiner's coming on a solo home run.
In the top of the fifth, with Weiner on first and
Sam Monroe (Moline, Ill./Moline) on second, Prince hit a home run to center field to give the Miners a 7-0 lead. Later in the bottom of the sixth, the Tritons got their first run of the game off a solo home run, starting pitcher
Ben Belgrave (Cary, IL/Cary-Grove) would get the final out of the inning with a lineout, ending his day with a 4 strikeouts and 1 earned run.
The Miners would add another run in the top of the eighth when Monroe took a walk with bases loaded for their final run of the day. The last three innings of the game would see
Matt Ellingson (Lenexa, KS/Olathe Northwest),
Matthew Kaiser (St. Louis, MO/Vianney), and
Jake Schisler (Quincy, IL/Quincy Notre Dame) all seeing time on the mound,
Matt Ellingson (Lenexa, KS/Olathe Northwest) giving up an earned run in the eighth as the Tritons made it an 8-2 game, which would hold out for the final score.
Belgrave's pitching record improves to 4-1 this season with the team's record ending at 27-22 overall and 17-18 in conference. Prince was not the only Miner to find success at the plate, with Weiner recording a hit and scoring three runs.
