Baseball to Close Out Regular Season with Series at UMSL

4/30/2024 3:00:00 PM

ST. LOUIS, Mo.  –  The final week of the regular season has arrived! The Miners will be playing against the UMSL Tritons in St. Louis Thursday through Saturday as they make a final push to earn a spot in the GLVC Baseball Championship.

Coming off a three-game series against Rockhurst that was complicated by poor weather, the Miners have a 24-21 overall record and are 14-17 in conference. They hold the 10th position in the standings, just 2 games behind eighth place.

The Miners took two out of three games against Rockhurst last week, getting 2-1 and 11-8 wins. Dylan Mollett's (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) performance in game one of the series earned him his second GLVC Pitcher of the Week award, as he put up a 0.00 ERA and struck out 8 batters. Game two was a rollercoaster of a game, with S&T leading 4-0 in the seventh but finding themselves down 8-4 in the middle of the tenth. A seven-run inning for the Miners in the bottom of the tenth would conclude with a three-run homerun that gave S&T a walk-off victory in their final home game of the season.

The Miners' team ERA improved to a 6.85 after their series against the Hawks, making them seventh in the conference. Mollett's award-winning performance has three top ten rankings in the individual leaderboards. He is seventh in ERA with a 4.35, ninth in strikeouts with 61, and tied for ninth in opposing batting average with a .257.

S&T's batting average is a .292, recording 390 hits this season as well as 35 home runs. The team on base percentage is still fifth best in the league at .427. The Miners are also fourth best in stolen bases, recording 86 on the season after picking up another 5 in the series against Rockhurst University. The Miners continue to lead the conference in triples with 18, as Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette) leads the team with 3 this season. Kenneth Sugi (North Vancouver, BC/Carson Graham Secondary) continues to have success at the plate as well, recording 4 runs and 4 RBIs against Rockhurst and striking out the second fewest times of anyone in the GLVC.
