High Scoring First Game Pushes Final Inning of Second Game to Tomorrow

3/9/2024 8:15:00 PM

Box Score ROLLA, Mo.  –  After a three and a half hour game to start the day's doubleheader, the Miners were forced to postpone the remainder of their second game until tomorrow morning at 11 am. S&T lost the first game 23-12 and were trailing 10-8 in the second when the postponement was determined.

Game 1: Greyhounds 23, Miners 12
Dylan Mollett (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) started the first game but would only see 2.2 innings, giving up nine hits and eight runs in that time. After going down 2-0 in the top of the second inning, RBIs from Tommy Ruether (Washington, MO/Washington), Carter Bither (Springfield, MO/Springfield Catholic), and Drew Baugus (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) brought three runs home to give S&T a one point lead. Mollett got his first out in top of the third quick, but things quickly derailed after that as he gave up two singles, a double, and a triple in the next four at bats. Later, after giving up another single that result in the Greyhounds taking a 7-2 lead, Mollett was replaced by Matt Ellingson (Lenexa, KS/Olathe Northwest). Ellingson would give up a two run homer and single before closing the inning with the Miners down 9-2.

A single by Matt Souza (Escondido, CA/Christian) would bring Nick Krodinger (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) home next inning, but that would be the Miners' only score of the inning. Ellingson was unable to get an out in the top of the fourth, walking two and allowing an RBI double before being replace by Andrew Agnew (Liberty, MO/Liberty North). The Greyhound hitters would prove a difficult task for the freshman pitcher, as he would allow a pair of homeruns, leaving the Miners in a 15-4 hole. S&T showed that they had the capability to score at will too, putting up six of their own in the bottom of the fourth which included a homerun for Souza, his second of the year.

The Miners would score another two in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Greyhounds adding runs in the fifth, sixth, and ninth to pull away with a 23-12 win. S&T's 12 runs were tied for their most in a game this season, the previous time being against Winona State in 12-5 victory. Through six pitchers, the Miners allowed a season-high 23 runs and 28 hits.

Game 2 (7th Inning Postponed): Greyhounds 10, Miners 8
Ethan Morrow (Lenexa, KS/Shawnee Mission West) drew the start in game two, surviving the first inning off a strikeout with bases loaded to keep the visitors scoreless early. The Miners would be the first to go up on the scoreboard, scoring two in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. The Greyhounds did not allow S&T to retain the lead very long though, scoring four in the top of the second, three of which were unearned.

The Miners would go cold at the plate, only recording one hit in the next three innings while the Greyhounds took a seven run lead. Dylan Bates (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) relieved Morrow in the middle of the third inning and would pitch until stoppage of play, allowing five hits in 3.2 innings. Doubles by Sam Monroe (Moline, Ill./Moline) and Kenneth Sugi (North Vancouver, BC/Carson Graham Secondary) gave the Miners their first runs since the opening inning and bringing the score to 9-4. After Bates only gave up one run in the top of the sixth, the Miners had their best offensive inning of the game in the bottom of the sixth, hitting two doubles, two singles and bringing in four runs to cut the Greyhounds' lead to two at 10-8.

The game was stopped before the seventh and final inning though, with the game set to conclude tomorrow morning at 11 am.
