CLAREMORE, Okla. – Missouri S&T's offensive attack was shackled by fourth-ranked Rogers State Thursday afternoon as the Hillcats took both ends of a doubleheader from the Miners by scores of 5-1 and 3-0.
The Miners had 10 hits in the opening contest but only managed to get a run across in the seventh inning, then were held without a hit in game two by RSU's Jade Sanders as they dropped to 7-13 on the season.
S&T will play again on Friday and will have another nationally-ranked team on tap, taking on 13
th-ranked Central Oklahoma at 1:30 p.m. at the Drury Classic in Springfield, Mo., before finishing the day with a matchup with Minnesota Duluth at 3:30 p.m.
Game 1 – Rogers State 5, Miners 1
The Miners fell behind 4-0 in the first inning of the opener, as the Hillcats (11-4) got an RBI single from Kaylee Lyon that preceded a three-run homer off the bat of Abbey Rogers. Rogers State scored its fifth run on an infield hit by Bridgett Morales.
S&T had runners on base in every inning of the contest, including leaving the bases loaded in the second and two runners on in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The Miners finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh when
Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) drew a leadoff walk and
Sydney Anderson (Elkhart, IA/North Polk) doubled to bring home pinch-runner
Peyton Dillon (Yorkville, Ill./Rosary).
Anderson and
Allie Kelly (Park Hills, MO/Central) had two hits apiece for S&T, who got hits from eight different hitters in the lineup.
Mayce Barber (Excelsior Springs, Mo./Excelsior Springs) took the loss in the circle, as she scattered five hits and struck out two.
Game 2 – Rogers State 3, Miners 0
S&T again fell behind in the early innings, as the Hillcats got two runs off starter
Charlye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark./Lake Hamilton) in the second and then added a run in the fifth. But the Miners couldn't get anything started against Sanders as the only runners S&T could get in the game came on three walks.
Ty Neal (Enid, OK/Kremlin-Hilldale) walked to open the second, but was thrown out stealing on a strikeout that ended the inning, then the Miners met a similar fate in the fifth when Anderson walked and pinch-runner Kiera Jones was thrown out stealing on a strikeout. S&T's third runner was
Lula Sassano (Decatur, IL/St. Teresa), who walked with two outs in the sixth and Dillon, who ran for her, ended up at third after a stolen base and a wild pitch but was stranded there.
Sanders struck out 10 in her outing, while Rowland allowed six hits and fanned seven.
