Miners drop pair Sunday in Oklahoma

EDMOND, Okla. – Missouri S&T's softball team resumed play Sunday at the Raising Canes Classic and dropped both of its contests on the day, as it was shut out by Washburn 9-0 and then lost in a slugfest by a 9-7 count to Arkansas Tech.

The Miners fell to 3-7 on the season and will wrap up their trip to Oklahoma Monday when they play a doubleheader against Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla.  The 1 p.m. doubleheader will make up for the two games on the schedule that were lost due to the weather on Saturday, one of which was to be against the River Hawks.

Washburn 9, Miners 0

The Miners were held to four hits in their first game of the day, one in which the Ichabods (9-3) scored in three of the four innings they batted in before the game was called on the run rule after the Miners batted in the fifth.

S&T got two of its four hits – singles by Ty Neal (Enid, OK/Kremlin-Hilldale) and Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) -- in the top half of the first, but were unable to score and Washburn strung together three hits and a walk into three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The Ichabods would add two runs in the third and four more in the fourth to build the nine-run margin.

The Miners' other hits in the game came from Trista Grove, who singled with two outs in the third and a second off the bat of Wooldridge, who led off with a hit in the fourth.  Wooldridge suffered the loss in the circle for the Miners, striking out three and allowing 10 hits along the way.

Arkansas Tech 9, Miners 7

S&T fell behind in its second game of the day in the opening inning as well as the Golden Suns (8-2) got a run across on a bases loaded walk, but got three runs across in the third to take the lead.

With one out, Isabella Welston singled and Elizabeth Viox (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) drew walk.  After Grobe hit into a fielder's choice, Wooldridge belted an opposite field double to bring home both runners to put the Miners in front.  Sydney Anderson (Elkhart, IA/North Polk) followed with a double that scored Wooldridge with the third run of the frame.

However, Arkansas Tech tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame and regained the lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Kaylyn Aguirre, only to see S&T tie it up in the fifth on another RBI double by Wooldridge that scored Viox.  The Golden Suns went back in front with three runs in the fifth, but S&T answered back with a three-run sixth to even the game at seven.

After Peyton Dillon (Yorkville, Ill./Rosary) and Lula Sassano (Decatur, IL/St. Teresa) reached on infield hits – followed by a double play – Welton pushed a single up the middle to score Dillon and Viox reached on an error to keep the inning alive.  With the runners at second and third, Grobe singled down the line in left to score both runners to tie it up.

But in the bottom of the sixth, some sloppy defense by the Miners led to the eventual winning runs.  After a leadoff single, back-to-back errors loaded the bases.  S&T starter Charlye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark./Lake Hamilton) got a foul out and a pop up to retire the next two hitters, but Abigail Lochala singled to drive in two – both unearned runs – to put Arkansas Tech back in the lead.

The Miners outhit Tech 11-9 – Wooldridge and Anderson had two hits apiece for S&T – but the Miners were undone with four errors in the field that led to four unearned runs.  Rowland struck out six on the afternoon.
