Jordan Burton Breaks All-Time Record, Miners Swept at Lewis

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Missouri S&T fell to both Flagler and Lewis as Jordan Burton (Olathe, KS/Olathe South) broke the all-time kill record for the Miners.

Game One Recap vs. Flagler (0-3 L)

The Saints swept S&T on Friday afternoon in the first of two matches. The two teams started with four-point runs to tie 4-4 that went all the way to 12-12. Flagler recorded seven points in nine tries to go up 19-14 later in the set. S&T attempted a comeback, but they fell to Flagler 25-19.

The Miners fell once again in the second set, this time 25-14. S&T was down 8-7 early in the set but the Saints eventually took a 19-10 lead with a large run. Their four points in the last five attempts put them ahead 2-0 in the match as they won 25-14.

The Saints swept the Miners 3-0 as S&T fell 25-15 in the third set. Flagler took an early lead of 10-3 that turned into 14-4. The Miners got back within five points at 19-14 but they only had one point the rest of the way. They lost to the Saints 25-15 and 3-0 in the match.

Every player on the S&T roster played except for Madison Smith (Boonville, MO/Boonville). Jordan Burton (Olathe, KS/Olathe South) picked up six kills and four digs. Her six kills tied the all-time kill record. Alina Carrillo (Oviedo, FL/Hagerty) recorded four kills and four digs. Annie Arand (Washington, MO/St. Francis Borgia) led the team with nine assists and five digs.

Game Two Recap at Lewis (0-3 L)

S&T was swept by Lewis in the second match 3-0. In the first set, the Flyers won 25-17. The Miners took an early 3-1 lead, but Lewis went on a run to go up 10-5. That lead elevated the Flyers over S&T as the Miners could not stage a comeback to fall 25-17.

In the second set, the Flyers won 25-16. To open the set, the Flyers took an early 6-2 lead that turned into 11-3 quickly. Burton made it 11-4 for her 1,307th kill of her career. That mark is now the all-time record at Missouri S&T.
 
After that kill, the Miners attempted a comeback, but the Flyers closed the door on it. They won the set 25-16 after Burton's record.

Once again, S&T fell in the third set 25-16 to fall to Lewis 3-0 in the match. The two teams were back-and-forth early on, but Lewis went on a four-point run to go up 13-7. A five-point run after two S&T points made it 18-9. Both teams traded points late in the set, but it was not enough for the Miners as they were swept by Lewis 3-0.

Isabelle Monaco (O'Fallon, MO/Living Word Christian) led the Miners with eight kills and 18 digs. Her .250 hitting percentage also led the team. Carrillo was second with her seven kills and eight digs. Burton collected six kills to extend her record to 1,313 kills. Elise Mehaffy (Marion, IA/Marion) tallied 13 assists, eight digs and two kills. Annie Arand (Washington, MO/St. Francis Borgia) had 10 assists and five digs.

What's Next

The Miners will be back in action on Saturday afternoon at Indianapolis. That match is slated for 2 p.m. CT. They will come back home on Nov. 9 to play Maryville at 3 p.m.
