Women's Volleyball End 2024 Season with a Split

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T Women's Volleyball split their final two matches of the 2024 season over the weekend.

Game One Recap vs. Truman State (0-3 L)

The Miners lost the first set 25-23 to the Bulldogs. The two teams traded runs in the beginning as it was tied 4-4 early. After S&T took a 15-13 lead, Truman responded with a four-point run to make it 17-15. They recorded seven of the next 10 points to make the score 24-20. The Miners attempted a comeback as they made it 25-23, but a service error gave Truman a 1-0 lead.

Truman won the second set with a bigger margin of 25-18. For the first 21 points, the two teams were back-and-forth as the Bulldogs led 11-10. They recorded eight of the next nine points to go up 19-11. Both sides traded points the rest of the set and a service ace ended the set 25-18.

In the third set, the Bulldogs won 25-23 to sweep the Miners. S&T took an early 11-9 lead after a four-point run. They held that lead until Truman went on a run to take a 14-13 lead. They both traded points to stay within one point of each other until S&T was up 23-22. Truman ended the match on a three-point run to sweep the Miners.

Jordan Burton (Olathe, KS/Olathe South) and Alina Carrillo (Oviedo, FL/Hagerty) both led the Miners with eight kills. Elise Mehaffy (Marion, IA/Marion), Isabelle Monaco (O'Fallon, MO/Living Word Christian), Madison Offerman (Herscher, IL/Herscher) and Madison Smith (Boonville, MO/Boonville) all picked up five kills. Carrillo led S&T with 13 digs, while Reese Massey (Kansas City, MO/Staley) had nine. Mehaffy put up 16 assists and five digs and Annie Arand (Washington, MO/St. Francis Borgia) collected 15 assists and eight digs. Offerman had four blocks for S&T. Carrillo and Smith both tabbed three.

Game Two Recap vs. Upper Iowa (3-0 W)

Missouri S&T responded on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep against Upper Iowa. The first set was won by the Miners with a score of 26-24. It was close early, but the Peacocks took a 9-4 lead thanks to a four-point run. S&T responded with a four-point run of their own and after Upper Iowa got a point back, the Miners put up four more straight points to make it 12-10. The Peacocks responded as they took a 16-14 lead, but S&T tied it up at 18-18. At 22-22, both teams put up two points to tie it at 24-24. A kill by Mehaffy gave S&T a 26-24 victory.

In the second set, the Miners won 25-23. Upper Iowa took an early 5-3 lead that extended to 13-9. At that point, S&T put up six straight points to take a 15-13 lead. That lead held as the Miners extended it to 20-16 later in the set. The Peacocks attempted a comeback as they were down by one at 23-22. S&T had two of the last three points after Monaco ended it for S&T with a kill.

The Miners won their last set of the season 28-26 over the Peacocks. Upper Iowa took an 8-3 lead early in the set over S&T. The Miners went on a six-point run to take an 11-9 lead. However, the Peacocks responded taking a 15-13 lead. Late in the set, S&T came back to lead 21-20. They were in a match point at 24-22 but the Peacocks had two straight points to tie it at 24-24. The two teams traded points until Monaco and Offerman combined for a block to win the set 28-26.

Carrillo put up another double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs. Monaco also had a double-double with her 12 kills and 14 digs. Monaco recorded a season-best .379 hitting percentage. Offerman put up nine kills and seven blocks for the Miners. Lexi Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, IL/Newsome) had five kills, three blocks and three digs. Arrand recorded 20 assists to lead the team. Mehaffy had 13 assists, 10 digs and four kills. Mya McClain (Fort Dodge, IA/St. Edmond) and Massey both collected seven digs.

With the win, the Miners season has concluded as they ended in ninth place in the GLVC, just short of the tournament. With a 5-8 GLVC record, S&T was just behind McKendree at 6-7 in eighth place. The Miners finished 2024 with an overall record of 9-18.

All-GLVC teams will be released in the coming weeks.
