ROLLA, Mo. -- A second half goal by
Greycen Erisman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit West) was enough to give the Miners a lead for roughly 18 minutes of game time before a breakaway goal by Upper Iowa tied the contest with under six minutes left, leading to a tie.
The Miners created some opportunities on offense early, pushing down into the Peacocks' defensive third and earning a trio of corner kicks in the opening 16 minutes. At 16:12 the Miners would get a pair of shots on goal, the second of which came from
Jillian Pelger (Tulsa, OK/Bishop Kelley) and very nearly scored if not for a UIU defender getting the save and covering the ball to jam any further attempts by the Miners.
The Miners would continue to control the ball in the next several minutes, with
Haylee Prime (Lewis Center, OH/Olentangy Orange) getting a shot blocked inside the box after a pass in from
Jenna Marti (Sammamish, WA/Eastside Catholic) and
Allison Cole (Mansfield, TX/Mansfield) sailing a ball over the goal after a cross from
Macy Wilderson (Kansas City, MO/St. Pius X). Scoring opportunities would reduce in the 24 minutes before halftime as fatigue set up for the Miners, with S&T only getting two shots on goal in that time.
The Peacocks flip the script at the start of the second half, getting three shots off in the first 14 minutes of the half. A yellow card on UIU's Natalie Lima would give the Miners a free kick just outside the box at 66:24. The Miners ran a set piece that had
Ava Hoenes (Columbia, MO/Hickman) pass the free kick laterally to Erisman, giving her the necessary space to get a shot off and score the Miners first goal since October 6th.
The teams matched each other in shots over the next 18 minutes, with each getting two, including a shot on goal by
Ava Hoenes (Columbia, MO/Hickman) that required a diving save by UIU's goalie to prevent the Miners from scoring again. Less than a minute later, a good through ball by the Peacock's midfield led to #26 Jordan Goldstein getting a wide-open look from the left side of the box and crossing it into the right side of the net to tie the match at 1-1. The pressure ramped up for both teams in the final six minutes, with both getting shots off and
Natalie Newman (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) making a pair of key saves to keep the match tied and help the Miners hold on to a 1-1 result.
Newman earned her first start in goal of this season, making eight saves and providing a good vocal presence for S&T. The Miners tied their season-high for shots on goal, with six, and tied the second-most shot attempts in a match this season with ten.
