Carrillo's Three Double-Doubles Guide Miners to a 2-1 Weekend

HAMMOND, Ind. – Missouri S&T Women's Volleyball lost their first match but bounced back with two sweeps at the Midwest Region Crossover.

Game One Recap vs. Purdue Northwest (1-3 L)

The Miners and Lions were very back-and-forth in the first set, but Purdue Northwest won 26-24. With a six-point tie, the Lions took six points in seven attempts to go up 12-7. S&T responded as they picked up five points in six tries to go down by one point. S&T went up 17-16 as the two teams were very close the rest of the set. No team went up by more than one point until the Lions won 26-24.

S&T took the second set from Purdue Northwest 25-19. An early four-point lead for the Miners carried them throughout the set. S&T led the entire way as they went up 18-13 late in the set. After the Lions made it 18-14, S&T put them away as they went up 21-14 and eventually won 25-19. Madison Offerman (Herscher, IL/Herscher) ended it for the Miners with a kill, her second of the set.

The Lions responded with a 25-19 win of their own in the third set. They took an early 9-6 lead, but the Miners tied it up at 10-10. After a three-point Lions run, S&T tied it up at 14-14. Purdue Northwest recorded their biggest run of the set as they took a 20-15 lead. That lead carried them to the end as they won 25-19 to take a 2-1 match lead.

In the fourth set, Purdue Northwest won 25-20 to take the match 3-1. Midway through the set, the Miners tallied a six-point run to take a 12-7 lead over the Lions. However, the Lions picked up nine points in 10 attempts to take an 18-14 lead. That lead held for the Lions as they won 25-20 to take the match.

Once again, Alina Carrillo (Oviedo, FL/Hagerty) recorded a double-double in this match with 15 kills and 14 digs. Isabelle Monaco (O'Fallon, MO/Living Word Christian) also had a double-double with 12 kills and 21 digs. Jordan Burton (Olathe, KS/Olathe South) added seven kills and Lexi Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, IL/Newsome) also had seven. Annie Arand (Washington, MO/St. Francis Borgia) collected 21 assists and 14 digs for a double-double. Elise Mehaffy (Marion, IA/Marion) was close with 18 assists and nine digs. Libero Reese Massey (Kansas City, MO/Staley) chipped in 16 digs.

Game Two Recap vs. Cedarville (3-0 W)

Missouri S&T swept Cedarville 3-0 in their second match of the Midwest Region Crossover. They recorded a 25-17 first set victory, their largest victory of the match. After S&T went up 7-3, the Hornets tied it up at 7-7 and eventually took a 10-7 lead. The Miners, however, went up 17-14 but Cedarville were within two points at 19-17. To close out the set, S&T went on a six-point run to win 25-17. A Cedarville attack error gave the Miners the win.

In the second set, the Miners topped the Hornets 25-21. To begin the set, S&T went up 7-0 to put pressure on Cedarville. Later in the set, Cedarville recorded seven points in eight attempts to go up 12-10. The Miners answered with a run of their own to go up 15-13 but the Hornets tied it at 15-15. S&T put up five straight points to go up 21-16. That run carried them through the end of the set as Monaco ended it to give the Miners a 2-0 match lead.

S&T put Cedarville away as they won the third set 25-20. The Miners recorded nine consecutive points to go up 13-5 early in the set. The Hornets responded and got within three points at 14-11. The Miners did not break, however, as they were able to keep the Hornets in check to win the set 25-20 and win the match 3-0.

For the Miners, it was their first sweep win of the 2024 season. Carrillo and Monaco both recorded double-doubles once again as Carrillo had 16 kills and 11 digs, while Monaco collected 12 kills and 13 digs. Madison Smith (Boonville, MO/Boonville) picked up five blocks with three kills. Mehaffy had 17 assists, nine digs and two aces, while Arand tallied 13 assists and eight digs.

Game Three Recap vs. Thomas More (3-0 W)

The Miners recorded a 3-0 sweep over Thomas More on Saturday evening. In the first set, the Miners dominated the Saints with a 25-13 victory. They went out to an early 6-2 lead that quickly turned into 10-4. S&T held a commanding lead after they put up a seven-point run to go up 19-9. Their three-point run at the end of the set ended it at 25-13. Carrillo tallied the final kill for S&T.

In set two, Missouri S&T won 25-22. An early four-point run guided S&T to a 7-4 lead. Both teams traded three-point runs but S&T put up another three points to increase their lead to 14-8. In the later parts of the set, the Saints tried to mount a comeback, but the Miners did not break as they promptly ended runs. Monaco ended the second set with a kill to give S&T a 2-0 match lead.

S&T ended the match with a dominating 25-15 third set victory. An early four-point run guided Missouri S&T to a 5-3 lead, but the Saints responded as they eventually went up 13-10. Following that lead, the Miners collected eight points in nine tries. After the Saints got one point back to make it 18-15, S&T ended the match with a seven-point run. The Miners collected 15 of the last 17 points in the set to win 3-0.

As per usual, Carrillo had another double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs. It is her 13th double-double of the season in 19 matches played. Kosmopolis posted 10 kills, one off her season-best of 11. Mya McClain (Fort Dodge, IA/St. Edmond) recorded five assists and 11 digs for the Miners. Mehaffy picked up 18 assists, four kills, four digs and three aces, while Arand had 13 assists. Smith collected four blocks and Monaco recorded three.

With the win, the Miners moved to 6-13 on the season and go back into GLVC play on a two-match win streak.

What's Next

S&T will come back home next weekend to face McKendree on Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. and UMSL on Oct. 26 at 5 p.m. Following the weekend, they will go back on the road to face Flagler, Lewis and Indianapolis on Nov. 1-2.
