KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Miners fell to the Rockhurst Hawks in straight sets today.
Alina Carrillo (Oviedo, FL/Hagerty) recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs.
1st Set
The Hawks took control of the set early, recording six kills in the opening eleven points to claim a 9-2 lead. A kill by
Jordan Burton (Olathe, KS/Olathe South) started a five-point run for S&T that cut the Hawks lead to two. A few points a later, a four-point run featuring kills by Carrillo and
Madison Smith (Boonville, MO/Boonville) would tie the game at 11-11.
The Miners and Hawks kept pace with each other up to 17-17, at which point a pair of Hawks kills and several attacking errors by S&T led to a 7-1 run for RU. A kill by
Madison Offerman (Herscher, IL/Herscher) and an ace from
Annie Arand (Washington, MO/St. Francis Borgia) cut the Hawks lead to 24-21, prompting a timeout from RU. A kill from
Isabelle Monaco (O'Fallon, MO/Living Word Christian) would shave one more point off of the Hawks lead, before a double block by RU's Delaney Hope and Sarah Pyle ended the set at 25-22.
2nd Set
Rockhurst pulled ahead early again, taking a 9-3 lead. The Miners would match the Hawks over the next eight points though, bringing the score to 13-7 halfway through the set. Rockhurst would then use a three-point run to pull further away, eventually taking the set 25-11.
3rd Set
It was S&T's turn to take the early lead in the third, going up 7-3 due in part to service aces by
Elise Mehaffy (Marion, IA/Marion),
Mya McClain (Fort Dodge, IA/St. Edmond), and Monaco. Five kills by Rockhurst in the ensuing points would lead to a 9-2 run for the Hawks, giving them a 12-9 lead. The Hawks lead would grow to four before a 4-1 run fueled by a pair of Carrillo kills cut the Miners' deficit to just one. After trading points, RU would go on a three-point run to make it a 20-16 game, leading to a timeout from coach
Jacquie Cason. A kill by Burton would end the Hawks run, with the Miners going on a 3-0 run shortly after to make it a 22-20 score and force a Rockhurst timeout. The teams would trade points through the end of the set, with RU taking set three 25-22 to get the win.
