ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — The Miners dropped to 2-7-1 with tonight's loss to the Lewis Flyers. The contest was a 1-0 win for Lewis, with the only goal coming off a penalty kick in the 67th minute.
The Flyers tested
Anastasia Barcom (St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain) early in the match, getting a shot on goal just over a minute and a half into the competition which led to a save by Barcom. Lewis would continue to pressure the Miners defense in the first half, getting another ten shots on goal before halftime, including a sequence that included four shots in under three minutes. Despite the high volume of shots for the Flyers, the Miners went into halftime tied at 0-0 and even with Lewis at one shot on goal for each team.
The Miners matched the Flyers' attack at the start of the second half, with each team getting just one shot off in the first 21 minutes. In the 67th minute, a corner by Lewis lead to a header that would have scored if not for a handball by
Savannah Tully (Elkhart, IN/Elkhart), leading to her ejection off of a red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity. The result was a penalty kick for Lewis' Elisa Aguilar that found the back of the net in the bottom right corner to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead.
Despite being down a player, the Miners managed to get a few shots off in the late stages of the game, but were unable to draw even, losing 1-0 and dropping to 2-7-1 on the season.
