Miners begin home slate Sunday with Missouri Southern

9/6/2023 4:32:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Following two ties to get its season underway last week, Missouri S&T's women's soccer team will play its first home game of the 2023 campaign Sunday when it faces Missouri Southern in an noon contest.

The Miners and Lions squared off early last season in a game that S&T led 3-0 in the second half before inclement weather came through the Rolla area before the game had reached the 70-minute mark.  After a brief resumption of play, another weather stoppage led to the game being called still short of 70 minutes and not being resumed.

In their opening weekend of action, the Miners played to a 1-1 tie with Delta State and gained a 2-2 tie with a goal in the final nine minutes of regulation time by Olivia Olson (Maryville, IL/Edwardsville).  The other two goals of the weekend came courtesy of Amelia Mundo (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North), who got S&T on the scoreboard with the first goal of the game early in the second half at Delta State and then scored in the first nine minutes on Sunday from an assist by Beth Roberts (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty).

Olson's goal was an unassisted tally as it came off a rebound in front of the net.

Natalie Newman (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) played both games in goal for S&T last week and made eight saves in the two contests.  She comes into Sunday's game with a 1.50 goals against average.

ABOUT MISSOURI SOUTHERN: The Lions traveled to Texas and Oklahoma to begin their campaign last week and came up on the short end of the score both times, losing 2-1 at Texas Woman's University and 4-0 at Oklahoma Christian.

Maya Greenquist had the lone goal of the weekend for Southern, which tied the game early in the second half before Texas Woman's scored with less than nine minutes remaining to pull out the win.  On Saturday, Southern gave up all four goals to Oklahoma Christian in the second half.  Lily Doneghue played both games between the pipes and made six saves in those outings.
