Miners blanked at Illinois Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Missouri S&T's women's soccer team was shut out for the second straight time in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Sunday afternoon, as Illinois Springfield made a first half goal hold up in a 1-0 win over the Miners.

Carolyne Mathenia scored the only goal of the contest for the Prairie Stars (1-2-3, 1-1 GLVC) as she scored in the 27th minute of action.   Mathenia got a feed from about 30 yards out into a one-on-one situation with a Miner and hit a shot into the upper left corner of the net.

UIS held a 19-7 advantage in shots in the contest – Ashley Haag (Keller, TX/Keller Central) and Grace Young (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) had two apiece for S&T – and had nine shots on net to the Miners' one.  Young had the one on goal for S&T (1-2-2, 0-2 GLVC) in the 43rd minute of play, while Haag, Haylee Prime (Lewis Center, OH/Olentangy Orange) and Isabella Hubble (Mascoutah, IL/Mascoutah) all had shots during the final 20 minutes as the Miners were trying to draw even.

Anastasia Barcom (St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain), meanwhile, made eight saves in the S&T goal.

Missouri S&T will return home next weekend for a pair of contests, beginning with Friday's 5 p.m. match with Southwest Baptist.
