QUINCY, Ill. – Quincy scored twice in a span of under six minutes Friday night to send Missouri S&T's women's soccer team to its first loss of the season, as the Hawks took a 2-0 decision from the Miners in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams.
The Hawks (1-3-1, 1-0 GLVC) got their goals on both sides of the halftime intermission, getting a tally in the 42
nd minute from Hannah Warnecke and the 48
th minute from Isabel Montileone to hand the Miners (1-1-2, 0-1 GLVC) their first setback in four decisions.
After the teams played for over 40 minutes without a goal, Warnecke beat S&T goalkeeper
Anastasia Barcom (St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain) from the top of the box into the upper left corner to put the Hawks on top. Montileone also scored to the right of Barcom on a shot from the far side of the box.
Quincy outshot the Miners 18-11, although the teams were nearly even in shots net with the Hawks holding a 7-6 edge.
Amelia Mundo (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) had three of the 11 Miner shots, while
Natalia Kaminski (Wesley Chapel, FL/Wiregrass Ranch),
Aubrey Case (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) and
Beth Roberts (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) all had two apiece. Barcom made five saves in goal for S&T.
The Miners return to action Sunday when they take on Illinois Springfield in a noon game in Springfield, Ill.
