ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's women's soccer team opened its home schedule Sunday by breaking into the win column for the first time, as the Miners dispatched Missouri Southern 3-1 at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
S&T played to ties in its first two games of the season, but got a goal late in the first half from
Beth Roberts (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) and two additional tallies in the second half to get their initial victory of the 2023 campaign.
The game was scoreless until the 35
th minute when Roberts took a shot from in front of the box and hit it past MSSU goalkeeper Lilly Doneghue to give S&T a 1-0 lead it would take to halftime.
The Miners added onto their advantage nine minutes into the second half when they converted on a corner kick opportunity. Haylee Pride sent the corner in front of the net and
Andersyn Foster (Belleville, IL/Althoff Catholic) hit the ball out of the crowd to double the Miner lead. S&T got its third goal in the 75
th minute when
Isabella Hubble (Mascoutah, IL/Mascoutah) got a pass from Roberts in front and scored.
Missouri Southern (0-3-1) broke the shutout in the 83
rd minute when Jordan Bell stole the ball from an S&T defender and scored an unassisted goal.
The Miners outshot the Lions 12-8 in the contest and had seven shots on net to five for MSSU.
Anastasia Barcom (St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain) and
Natalie Newman (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) split the goalkeeping duties for S&T and both were credited with two saves.
Missouri S&T opens its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule Friday with a game at Quincy beginning at 5 p.m.
