CLEVELAND, Miss. – Missouri S&T's women's soccer team got the first goal of the afternoon on Friday in its season opener at Delta State, but had to settle for a tie with the Lady Statesmen as DSU got the tying goal in the 65
th minute to bring about a 1-1 draw.
After a scoreless first half in which Delta State outshot S&T 5-1, the Miners broke on top in the 52
nd minute when freshman
Amelia Mundo (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) scored an unassisted goal by hitting a shot from the middle of the box to the left of goalkeeper Bailey Daugherty. Mundo finished with two of the Miners' four shots in the contest as the Lady Statesmen had an 9-4 advantage in that department.
Delta State tied the game on a goal by Jae'lasha Julien in the 65
th minute when she took a shot from near the penalty spot and beat S&T goalkeeper
Natalie Newman (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood). S&T had a corner kick opportunity late in the contest but was unable to convert it into a go-ahead tally.
Newman made three saves in goal as she made her first collegiate start on Friday.
Missouri S&T will return to action Sunday as it takes on Christian Brothers in a 1 p.m. match in Memphis, Tenn.
