Three Miners selected as All-America Scholars by GCAA

8/9/2023 11:34:00 AM

ROLLA, Mo. – Three student-athletes from Missouri S&T's 2022-23 golf team have earned honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America as members of its All-America Scholars team, as Gustav Liljedahl (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan), Carl Miltun (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) and Jeppe Thybo (Esbjerg, Denmark/Rybners Gymnasium) were among 214 NCAA Division II student-athletes honored on this year's squad.

The honors are given to student-athletes that are at least a sophomore both academically and in NCAA Division II eligibility, have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2 and have participated in 50 percent of the team's competitive rounds with a stroke average of under 78 shots per round.

Liljedahl was the Miners' top player at the NCAA Division II Championships as he finished in sixth place – the second-highest finish ever by a Miner at the NCAA Championships – and also medalist honors at the Arch Cup with an overall score of 135 that included a first round 64.  He also finished in a tie for first at the Watkins Invitational in Winona, Minn., and tied for fourth at the Music City Invitational in April.

During the season, Liljedahl, who received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in May, played 33 rounds and averaged 73.1 strokes per round; his lowest 54-hole score of 218 came at the Findlay Spring Invitational.

Miltun, a mechanical engineering major at Missouri S&T and who will be competing next week at the United States Amateur Championships in Parker, Colo., won medalist honors at the GLVC Championships for the second time in his career in 2023 and also finished first at the Findlay Spring Invitational during the season.  He would go on to post finishes of fifth at the NCAA Central/Midwest Regional and a tie for 14th at the national meet.  Miltun's season also included a second place showing at the Tunica Cup and added a third place finish at the Hillcat Classic in Oklahoma.

During the season, Miltun averaged 71.3 shots in the 33 rounds he played.  He set new GLVC records in his winning performance at the conference championships by posting an overall score of 203 to finish 13 shots under par and winning the event by 10 strokes.  His second round score of 63, the lowest in GLVC history, also tied the course record at Paradise Pointe Golf Course.

Thybo is majoring in physics at S&T and had an average of 73.2 shots in his 33 rounds of play this season, with a top finish of third at the McKendree Invitational.  He also placed fourth at the Watkins Invitational and posted his top 54-hole score of 215 at the Findlay Spring Invitational as well, where he finished in sixth place.

Thybo, who finished in a tie for 36th place at the NCAA Division II Championships, was also the golf team's nominee for the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award.

Two of three honorees – Miltun and Thybo – were named earlier this summer to the College Sports Communicators' Academic All-America team, while Liljedahl joined Miltun on the PING All-America squad for their play on the course.  All three individuals were selected to the CSC Academic All-District team.

The Miner trio was joined by 17 other student-athletes from Great Lakes Valley Conference schools that were selected to the GCAA's All-America Scholar team.
