DES MOINES, Iowa – Missouri S&T's
Jacob Luebbert (Warsaw, MO/Warsaw) continued his impressive season Saturday by capturing the title in the hammer throw at the prestigious Drake Relays.
Luebbert had a throw of 209-4 in the third round of the event, a mark that stood up through the finals. Minnesota's Isaiah Schafer had a throw of 208-6 in the fifth round to move into second place, but fell short of that mark in the final round. With his victory, Luebbert became the first student-athlete from a non-NCAA Division I school to win the hammer throw at the Drake Relays in at least a decade.
Nathan Swadley (Willard, MO/Willard) also competed in the hammer throw and had a top performance of 177-feet a day after posting a mark of 56-5¼ to earn a ninth place finish Friday in the shot put. Swadley, who reached that mark on his final throw of the day, was the top finisher among the non-Division I individuals in the shot put with the nearest non-Division I competitor – Iowa Western's Brandon Gayle -- finishing nearly two feet behind him and in 11
th place.
Jake Anderson (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) finished seventh in the pole vault as he cleared 14-11½, while
Aaron Toben (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) finished in 16
th place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.40 seconds.
On Thursday,
Hayes Pateidl (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley West) recorded a time of 9:15.26 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, roughly a second off his best time of the season in that event.
Missouri S&T will host the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships beginning on Thursday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
