4/18/2023 8:50:00 PM

Box Score ROLLA, Mo. - The S&T baseball team began a nine-game homestand with its last non-conference contest of the season Tuesday afternoon and saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end as the Miners fell to Pittsburg State by the score of 14-3 at the Ballpark at S&T.

S&T (18-16) got on the scoreboard first in the second inning on a two-out RBI single to left from Tommy Ruether (Washington, MO/Washington) that scored Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette), but the Gorillas (29-13) took a 2-1 lead in the top half of the third on back-to-back hits from Deagan Brady and Austin Warkins.

In the bottom of the frame and with two outs, S&T had runners on the corners and executed a successful double steal as Aaron Berkhoff (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain) beat the throw at home to tie the game at two.

The Gorillas took the lead for good in the fifth as they scored three runs on three consecutive doubles. Karson Coffee had the first of the three that scored Brady, then Cade Clemons followed with one that scored Coffee and Jake Grauberger drove in Clemons with the third double to make it 5-2.

S&T got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Chase Burgess (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley West) reached base on a single to left, then advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches from PSU reliever Cason Long and came in when Sam Monroe (Moline, Ill./Moline) followed with a groundout.

But in the sixth, the Gorillas broke the game open with a nine-run inning that started when the first four PSU hitters reached base in the inning. An error by Burgess at second base led to the first run of the frame. Pitt State got two big hits in the inning, a two-run single by Ryan Koval and a three-run homer by Warkins that closed the scoring in the inning.

The Miners had four hits that came from Burgess, Weiner, Dakota Sill (Lansing, KS/Lansing) and Ruether as S&T was outhit 14-4. S&T used 10 different pitchers in the midweek contest – none for more than an inning – with David Kephart (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest) taking the loss.

Brady had three hits for the Gorillas, while Warkins drove in four.

The Miners will return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a four-game series against McKendree starting Friday with a single game at 2 p.m. at the Ballpark at S&T.
