WASHINGTON, Mo. - The Missouri S&T men's volleyball team extended its winning streak to four games after defeating Emmanuel College in straight sets Saturday at St. Francis Borgia High School.
Saturday's match was tight throughout the afternoon, with all three sets being decided by two points and the latter two going past the 25-point mark before the Miners (7-8) finally prevailed.
Â
S&T had a 7-1 spurt early in the opening set, as
Nate Meyer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) had a kill and a block on each end of it. After Emmanuel called a timeout, the Lions worked their way back into the set and used a 6-1 run to even things at 11 after a service ace by Henrik Westhoff.
The opening set remained tight from that point on, with the 12th tie coming at 23 apiece following a kill by Meyer, then S&T closed out the set with a kill from
Grogan Kraus (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) and an attack error by the Lions that gave S&T the 25-23 win.
Â
S&T went up 4-1 to begin the second set, as Meyer had bookend kills in that early run. The Lions answered a short time later with a 4-0 run and took a 7-6 lead following a kill by Jayden Young. The Miners regained the lead when Kraus had back-to-back service aces that gave S&T a 9-7 advantage.Â
The second set saw the teams exchange the lead eight times and also had 16 ties. S&T took a 25-24 lead after an attacking error by Daniel Beacham, but the Lions scored two straight points on back-to-back kills by Young and Carlos Guerrero to go back into the lead. However, with the score tied at 27-27,
Jordan Orr (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) and Rohlwing won the set with back-to-back kills.Â
Â
In the final set, the Miners fell behind 14-9, but erupted for a 5-0 run as Meyer tied the set at 14-14 with a kill as
Zachary Carff (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) and
Josh Duett (Grain Valley, Mo./Grain Valley) added one kill each in that run. S&T would later put together another 5-0 run which started on a kill by Meyer. Rohlwing added a service ace and a kill by Kraus ended the run with the Miners up 23-20.Â
Â
The Lions responded with a 4-0 run where Guerrero gave Emmanuel the lead at 24-23 with a kill. However, S&T scored on back-to-back serves to take the 25-24 lead and then had seven match point opportunities before finally getting the victory on the seventh try, as Meyer had the second of his back-to-back kills to close the contest.
S&T was led in kills by Meyer with 15 and Duett with 10, while Meyer, Carff and Kraus each recorded two service aces. Defensively, Rohlwing and Orr added the only two blocks in this decision.
Â
The Lions (6-10) were led in kills by Young with 14 and Guerrero with 11.Â
