S&T fall twice to open series against Drury

ST.LOUIS, Mo. - The Missouri S&T baseball team dropped both ends of its Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday to Drury, as the Panthers scored a run in the ninth inning of game one to win 5-4 and then completed the sweep with a 12-4 in the second game. Saturday's games were played at Maryville University due to the wet field conditions in Rolla after the rains that fell late in the week.

Game 1:

Game one was a pitcher's duel in the early innings between Drury's Cody Bahl and S&T's Dylan Mollett (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) as each starting pitcher went three scoreless innings and combined to allow just three hits.

In the fourth, S&T (9-13, 1-9 GLVC) got on the scoreboard first on a two-out deep solo homer off the bat of Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) as he cleared the left center field wall to give the Miners a 1-0 lead.

Mollett ran into trouble in the fifth as DU's Conner Bain led off the inning with a solo blast that opened up a three-run inning for the Panthers. Later in the inning, Drury (15-11, 8-4 GLVC) got two runners on base and S&T called upon reliever Matthew Kaiser (St. Louis, MO/Vianney) out of the pen, but the first batter Kaiser faced -- Luke Burk -- broke the tie with an RBI double to left that scored Kaden Byrne. Max Elmer drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.

Aaron Berkhoff (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain) cut the lead in half in the sixth when he led off the inning with a solo blast to left, then Chase Burgess (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley West) gave S&T the lead in the seventh with a two-run double to left center that scored Matt Souza (Escondido, CA/Christian) and Tommy Ruether (Washington, MO/Washington).

In the eighth, S&T called upon reliever Elijah Gross (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit West), but Tyler Bastunas led off with a double and later scored on a Cooper Munro fielder's choice groundout that tied the game.

Byrne led off the ninth for the Panthers with a double to left center and he would score the go-ahead run Luc Fuller double to left center.  Drury closer Mason Majors set the Miners down in order in the ninth.

Burgess had two hits and two runs batted in for S&T, while Mollett pitched four innings and fanned five batters, The Miners were outhit 8-6 in the contest.

Game 2:

Estin McBroom (Monett, MO/Monett) made his sixth start of the season on the mound and pitched a scoreless first inning, but in the second, the Panthers took a 2-0 lead on a two-run double from Cooper Munro with two outs in the inning.

In the third, Drury erupted for five runs, starting with a Tyler Bastunas RBI double and then back-to-back home runs by Kellen Williamson and Wes Collins to break the game open. Williamson hit a three-run homer off McBroom, then Collins followed with a home run off reliever Matt Ellingson (Lenexa, KS/Olathe Northwest).

S&T got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning when Matt Souza (Escondido, CA/Christian) reached on a throwing error and Burgess followed with a two-run homer.

Drury tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth off Nate Wodka (Allen, TX/Allen), but the Miners scored twice in the sixth when Ruether doubled with two outs and Cole Hampton (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) blasted a two-run homer that made it 9-4. However, the Panthers added three more runs in the seventh for the final tally.

Ruether had three hits for S&T in game two, while Hampton and Burgess each drove in two. On the mound, the Miners used five pitchers who combined for seven strikeouts.

The Miners will conclude this series against Drury Sunday with a doubleheader starting at noon at Maryville University.
