HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The S&T baseball closed out its series with Alabama Huntsville with a victory as the Miners took the first of two scheduled games with the Chargers by a count of 11-2 Saturday afternoon. The final game of the series was canceled due to rain.
S&T opened the contest by getting its first two batters on base as
Chase Burgess (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley West) reached on a error and
Dakota Sill (Lansing, KS/Lansing) followed with a single.
Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) stepped in the box and tripled down the right field line to score Burgess and Sill to put the Miners up 2-0. Later in the frame with the bases loaded,
Matt Souza (Escondido, CA/Christian) doubled to left field that scored
Brady Voss (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) and
Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette) to make it 4-0.
Estin McBroom (Monett, MO/Monett) got the start on the mound for the Miners and was awarded the four-run cushion to begin his outing and pitched a scoreless first with three quick outs. In the top of the second, Burgess led off the inning with a double and later scored on a fielder's choice to give S&T a 5-0 lead.
UAH scored in the second, but S&T got more in the third when
Aaron Berkhoff's (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain) single to right center scored Souza.
In the top of the fifth and with two outs, Souza reached first on a hit by pitch, then Berkhoff and Burgess followed with back-to-back singles as Burgess drove home Souza with his single to right. WIth runners in scoring position, Sill singled up the middle that scored Berkhoff and Burgess to give the Miners a 9-1 lead.
S&T was not finished in the inning as
Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette) reached on a fielding error by the left fielder, allowing Wood and Sill to score that made the game 11-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, UAH added its final run of the game on a Daniel McCray double that scored Hunter Tillman as McBroom pitched 5.1 innings, adding one strikeout and only giving up two earned runs in his outing.
S&T called upon
David Kephart (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest) out of the bullpen as he recorded the final two outs of the inning and
Scott Henrich (West Bend, WI/West Bend) got the final out of the game by striking out McCary to end the game.
Sill had three hits to lead the Miners' offensive attack and he also scored twice. Burgess and Berkhoff each added two hits and Burgess crossed the plate three times. As a team, S&T outhit the Chargers 10-6 while taking five walks.
The Miners will return to S&T Ballpark with a four-game series against Hillsdale starting Friday with a single game at 1 p.m.
