Miners drop both games to Wayne State

ROLLA, Mo. - The S&T baseball team hosted Wayne State College for the middle two games of their four-game series Sunday afternoon, with the Miners dropping game one 6-5 and the nightcap 2-1 at the S&T Ballpark.

GAME 1:

The Miners grabbed the early lead in game one as Dakota Sill (Lansing, KS/Lansing) drew a one-out walk and then stole second to get into scoring position, which was followed by a Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) single to center that scored Sill. S&T scored again in the second to go up 2-0 when Aaron Berkhoff (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain) singled, stole second, moved to third on a ground ball to the right side and was awarded home on a balk by Wayne State starter Corbin Kirk.

Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette) added to the Miner lead as he led off the third with a solo home run to left field.

Meanwhile, Ethan Morrow (Lenexa, KS/Shawnee Mission West) was dominant on the mound in the early innings for the Miners, as he struck out the side in each of the first two innings and had nine strikeouts after recording one to begin the sixth inning.

In addition, Morrow had not allowed a hit through the first five innings, but got in trouble after a walk to Carter Thomas. Morrow's no-hitter was broken up by Quinn McCafferty on a single to right center, then Cade Lynam singled to score Thomas to get the Wildcats on the scoreboard. Moments later, Colin Lynam got WSC the lead with a  three-run homer.

Wayne State tackled on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, then the Miners got the tying run to the plate after Aaron Berkhoff (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain) reached base as he was hit by the pitch and Tommy Ruether (Washington, MO/Washington) reached on a fielder's choice that gave S&T runners on the corners with two outs.

Chase Burgess (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley West) then hit what appeared to be a game-tying home run – but in the midst of the celebration at the plate as he arrived, Burgess jumped in the air but missed the plate when he landed. After he went back to the dugout, the Wildcats appealed the play and Burgess was ruled out to end the game.

Wayne State outhit S&T 6-5 in the opener as Morrow took the loss. Burgess had two runs batted in as Berkhoff scored twice.

GAME 2:

Estin McBroom (Monett, MO/Monett) got the start in game two and ran into some trouble in his first inning, but was able to escape with just one run scoring following Colin Lynam's sacrifice fly to right field to score McCafferty. McBroom settled down after that and delivered back-to-back scoreless innings in the second and third.

In the bottom of the third, Wood blasted a home run over the left field fence to tie the game, but Wayne State took the lead back in the fourth with a long ball of its own, which came off the bat of Kyler Essink.

The Wildcats went to their bullpen after getting the lead in the fourth and Braden Cannon recorded the final 12 outs of the game to drop the Miners to 1-2 on the season.

Wayne State had a 5-3 advantage in hits in game two; S&T's hits came from Wood on the home run as well as Burgess and Jack Arbuckle (Webster Groves, MO/Webster Groves).

The Miners will conclude their four-game series against Wayne State Monday afternoon with first pitch at 1 p.m. at the S&T Ballpark.
