ROLLA, Mo. – After a one-year hiatus, Missouri S&T's women's soccer team returns to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament as it will take on 25
th-ranked Maryville Sunday at noon in St. Louis.
The Miners, who bring records of 6-7-3 overall and 5-7-1 in the GLVC into Sunday contest, qualified for the tournament following its 2-1 win over Upper Iowa on Friday. S&T fell in its regular season finale Sunday to Truman State, but now stares at a rematch against a Maryville team that beat the Miners 4-0 on Oct. 22 in Rolla.
S&T got goals from
Ashley Haag (Keller, TX/Keller Central) and
Olivia Olson (Maryville, IL/Edwardsville) in the win over Upper Iowa and has scored 17 times in its 16 games this season.
Beth Roberts (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) and
Amelia Mundo (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) lead the way with four goals apiece – Roberts also leads S&T with four assists for a team-high 12 points – while Olson has scored three times on the year.
In goal,
Anastasia Barcom (St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain) has started in 12 games this season and owns a 1.18 goals against average with 47 saves in 990 minutes of action. Barcom has also recorded two shutouts during the course of the year.
In S&T's last two appearances in the GLVC Tournament, the Miners won their opening round game on the road on both occasions, winning at Bellarmine in 2014 and at Truman State two years ago.
ABOUT MARYVILLE: The Saints finished the season with four straight victories – including the one over S&T – to win the GLVC regular season title and top seed for the tournament. Maryville has not allowed a goal during its current winning streak as goalkeeper Gigi Yurevich has lowered her goals against average to 0.53 for the year. On the offensive side, Maryville has scored a league-leading 41 times and four players have scored at least six goals this season, led by the seven posted by Nika Vemdal.
Vemdal had three of her goals in the win in Rolla, while Lexi Gentry is third in the conference with 20 points on six goals and eight assists. Elsa Nilson-Hurtig and Ashlyne Hunt have also scored six times apiece.
