ROLLA, Mo. – Coming off one of its best offensive and defensive showings in school history, Missouri S&T's football team heads to the road for the final time in the 2023 season as it will take on Quincy in a 1 p.m. Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup in Quincy, Ill.
The Miners rolled up 608 yards – the sixth-most in a game in school history – and held William Jewell to 118 in beating the Cardinals 57-20 on Homecoming at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. The win moved S&T to 3-6 on the year, but also to 3-2 in the GLVC as they are now in a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings with two weeks remaining.
S&T had a huge day on the ground in Saturday's win, led by
Kai Martin's (Clearwater, FL/Calvary Christian) 130 yards of the 354 compiled by the Miners during the afternoon.
Josh Sanders (Maize, KS/Maize) finished the day with 95 yards, while
Cameren Smith (Claymont, DE/Concord) finished with 76 and his 11
th touchdown run of the year that is tied for the league high.
Smith ranks fourth in the GLVC in rushing with 624 yards on the season, while Sanders is also among the top 10 with 424 yards and Martin just outside of it with 317 yards.
Quarterback
Gunnar Palacios (Canyon, TX/Canyon) had a big day as well, completing 15-of-18 passes for 190 yards and four touchdowns while also running for one. He has completed 58.2 percent of his throws on the season for 620 yards and eight touchdowns, with his leading target being
CJ Wiggins (Yuma, AZ/Gila Ridge) with 33 receptions for 504 yards and four touchdowns – two of them coming on Saturday.
CJ Jarmon has 29 catches for 441 yards and six touchdowns and
Blaize Klossner (Rolla, MO/Rolla) also has 29 receptions for 259 yards and a score.
Defensively, the Miners allowed their fewest yards in a game in 11 seasons and recorded eight quarterback sacks, four of them courtesy of
Sohl Gafa (San Pedro, CA/San Pedro) to help him land the GLVC's Defensive Player of the Week award. Gafa and
Bentley Hart (Brookland, AR/Brookland), who had two sacks Saturday, lead S&T with six sacks apiece, while
Nick Mattli (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt South) has 4.5 sacks and a team-leading 9.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
Safety
Carson Prenger (Jefferson City, MO/Blair Oaks) leads S&T with 64 tackles on the season, while linebacker
Justin Gniedziejko (Chicago, IL/Taft) has 59 stops and
Matt Brenneisen (Springfield, IL/Sacred Heart Griffin) has 34.
ABOUT QUINCY: The Hawks opened the 2023 season by winning four of its first five games, but have dropped three of their last four and bring records of 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the GLVC into its home finale on Saturday. Last week, Quincy let a 31-21 halftime lead slip through its grasp as McKendree rallied for a 41-34 win over the Hawks in Quincy.
The Hawks ran for 369 yards in the win, getting 111 and three touchdowns from Jadon Washington, 93 from Teon Dollard, 83 from JQ Brown and 82 from quarterback Ike Wiley. Brown leads Quincy with 594 yards, the fifth-most in the GLVC, and is tied for the league lead with S&T's
Cameren Smith (Claymont, DE/Concord) with 11 touchdowns. Dollard has 440 yards and Washington has 382 and six touchdowns.
Wiley got the start at quarterback last week and was 12-of-25 for 81 yards, but Drake Davis has started the other eight games and has completed 62.1 percent of his passes for 1,619 yards and 16 touchdowns and only two interceptions. Marlin Washington leads the QU receivers with 38 catches for 547 yards and five touchdowns as eight different Hawks have caught scoring passes on the year. Quincy ranks second in the GLVC in total offense with 415.6 yards per game.
Brock Inman leads Quincy with 59 tackles on the season, while David Tabakovic has a team-leading 12.5 tackles for a loss and six sacks that is tied for the overall lead in the GLVC. Inman has a conference-leading five interceptions that includes one that was returned for a touchdown for a unit that ranks third overall in giving up just 297.8 yards per game.
