ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's women's soccer team picked up its second straight victory and moved back to the .500 mark in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday evening as it defeated Missouri-St. Louis 2-1 at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
The Miners (4-3-3, 3-3-1 GLVC) got second half goals from
Beth Roberts (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) and
Ava Hoenes (Columbia, MO/Hickman) in the victory, as the Miners followed up their win Sunday at William Jewell with their third win in GLVC play.
The game was scoreless at the intermission, but the Miners moved in front in the 60
th minute when Roberts got the ball following an UMSL giveaway and put a shot by Triton goalkeeper Grace Hastert into the upper right corner of the net.
UMSL (4-3-3, 3-2-1 GLVC) got a couple of scoring chances as the clock wound under the 10-minute mark, but those shot attempts were off the mark. Then with under two minutes to go,
Andersyn Foster (Belleville, IL/Althoff Catholic) knocked a ball ahead to Ameilia Mundo, who sent a pass across the field to Hoenes and she hit a shot from the top of the box into the lower right corner to give the Miners a two-goal lead.
The Tritons got to within a goal when they were awarded an indirect free kick in the box with a minute to go and Kayley Judy scored. But in the final minute, the Miners prevented the Tritons from getting a good opportunity to tie the score.
S&T was outshot 10-6 in the game, but both teams had four shots on net. S&T goalkeeper
Anastasia Barcom (St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain) had three saves in goal in picking up the win.
Missouri S&T will host McKendree Sunday in a noon contest at the S&T Soccer Field.
