ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T needed three things to happen Friday to clinch a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Soccer Tournament – and got all three in its favor that included a 2-1 win over Upper Iowa at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
The first thing S&T needed was a win by Maryville over Truman State and the Saints won the afternoon tilt in St. Louis 2-0. Next, it needed Indianapolis and Quincy to play to a tie and thanks to a Chloe Noon goal in the 85
th minute, UIndy forged a 1-1 draw with the Hawks. By the time that game ended around halftime of the S&T contest, the Miners (6-6-3, 5-6-1 GLVC) had taken a 1-0 lead on a goal by
Ashley Haag (Keller, TX/Keller Central) in the 43
rd minute.
Shortly after S&T got a corner kick opportunity, Haag got a pass in the box from
Beth Roberts (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) and got it past UIU goalkeeper Belle Wagner to give the Miners the lead with less than two minutes to go before the intermission.
The Miners then added to the lead just over two minutes into the second half when
Grace Young (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) got the ball away from a Peacock defender and to
Olivia Olson (Maryville, IL/Edwardsville), who put a shot into the far corner of the net to make it 2-0.
S&T's defensive unit held off Upper Iowa (2-12-2, 1-9-2 GLVC) for most of the second half, with
Anastasia Barcom (St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain) turning away five shots in the game. The Peacocks did cut the lead to 2-1 in the 87
th minute when Meghan Zwicker converted a penalty kick, but couldn't get another shot over the final two-plus minutes.
Each team had 12 shots in the game, but S&T had six corner kick chances to Upper Iowa's three.
The Miners will host Truman State Sunday in their conference finale at noon; the Miner seniors will be honored following Sunday's game. The GLVC Tournament will get underway on Nov. 5.
