Miners host William Jewell for Homecoming on Saturday

10/24/2023 4:17:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's football team looks to pick up its first win on Homecoming in four years as it plays host to William Jewell Saturday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. for the Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.

The Miners saw their two-game winning streak come to a halt Saturday in a 20-17 loss to McKendree in Lebanon, Ill., despite allowing just 204 yards of total offense to the Bearcats.  S&T overcame a slow start – falling behind 14-0 one play into the second quarter – to tie the game midway through the third period, but a turnover in the red zone ended a potential go-ahead scoring drive and the Bearcats would get the game-winning points on a field goal midway through the fourth quarter.

S&T quarterback Gunnar Palacios (Canyon, TX/Canyon) completed 17-of-30 passes for a career-high 231 yards in his third start behind center and has thrown for 430 in those three games.  He threw two touchdown passes as well, one to CJ Jarmon –who leads the Miners and is tied for the top spot in the GLVC with six scoring catches – and to Justis Braden (Liberty, MO/Liberty North), who has hauled in five scoring passes on the year among his 22 catches.

CJ Wiggins (Yuma, AZ/Gila Ridge) leads the receiving corps with 29 receptions for 461 yards – his average of 65.9 yards per game ranks fourth in the conference -- while Jarmon has 27 catches for 410 yards and Blaize Klossner (Rolla, MO/Rolla) has 26 catches for 238 yards.  On the ground, Cameren Smith (Claymont, DE/Concord) ranks fifth in the GLVC in rushing with 548 yards and shares the league lead with 10 touchdowns, while Josh Sanders (Maize, KS/Maize) has added 329 yards.

Defensively, safety Carson Prenger (Jefferson City, MO/Blair Oaks) led S&T with 11 tackles last week and has a team-leading 62 on the year, while Justin Gniedziejko (Chicago, IL/Taft) has 54 stops and fellow linebacker Justin Amaro (Wichita, KS/Goddard) has 32 tackles.  Amaro and Nick Mattli (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt South) each have 8.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage to lead the Miners, while Mattli and Bentley Hart (Brookland, AR/Brookland) have four quarterback sacks.

ABOUT WILLIAM JEWELL: The Cardinals lost for the third straight time last week, dropping a 31-10 decision at Truman State to fall to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the GLVC.  Truman raced out to a 21-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game and cruised to the victory, outgaining Jewell by a 406-213 margin on the afternoon.  The Cardinals' touchdown came on a nine-yard scoring pass from Taylor Eggars to Keaundre McCullough in the final minute of the first half.

Eggars, who has seen the bulk of the playing time at quarterback in the last three weeks, has completed 55 of 113 passes for 643 yards and five touchdowns on the year.  Deldrionn Amos leads the Cardinals in receptions with 30 for 444 yards and five touchdowns, while Layne Cavanah has 23 catches for 237 yards and AJ Austene and Nathan Barnett have 19 catches apiece.

McCullough is the top rusher for the Cardinals with 498 yards and four touchdowns, but as a team, Jewell has rushed for an average of only 86.7 yards per game that ranks at the bottom of the GLVC.  However, the Cardinals are ranked third in the conference in passing with 234.9 yards per game.

The Cardinals are paced on the defensive side of the ball by safety Sean Mitchell, who has 60 tackles and three interceptions on the season.  Linebacker Adam Callahan has been in on 45 stops as has Javion Macias, who has three of Jewell's six quarterback sacks.  The Cardinals have allowed a league-high 472.4 yards per game this season.
