Maryville's early rush sends S&T to defeat

ROLLA, Mo. – Maryville put three goals on the board in the first half Sunday against Missouri S&T's women's soccer team and went on to record a 4-0 win over the Miners in their Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at the S&T Soccer Field.

Maryville (10-2-3, 8-1-2 GLVC) grabbed the lead in the 17th minute when Lexi Gentry headed in Tori Calvert's corner kick.  The goal came moments after S&T goalkeeper Anastasia Barcom (St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain) had made a leaping save on a shot by Ulrika Breden, which brought about the corner kick that preceded the goal.

The Saints' second goal also came after a corner kick, as Nika Vendal hit a shot from out of a pack of players in front of the net past Barcome to double the Maryville lead.  Only a few seconds later, the Miners (5-6-3, 4-6-1 GLVC) had a chance to that goal back when they were awarded a penalty kick, but Natalia Kaminski's (Wesley Chapel, FL/Wiregrass Ranch) attempt went off the post.

Maryville got its third goal of the first half in the 39th minute when Vendal got a long lead pass and after having her initial shot blocked, got to the rebound and scored.  Vendal completed her hat trick when she scored another goal following a corner kick in the 60th minute.

The Saints had a 24-3 advantage in shots in the game and had 11 shots on net.  Barcom and Natalie Newman (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) split the goalkeeping duties, with Barcom making three saves in the first half and Newman making four over the final 45 minutes.

Missouri S&T will host Upper Iowa Friday at 5 p.m. to begin its final week of GLVC regular season competition.  The Miners currently hold the eighth and final playoff spot heading into the final weekend with 13 points after the conclusion of play on Sunday.
