Miners host Maryville Sunday looking to improve playoff position

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's women's soccer team looks to tighten its grip on a spot among the top eight in the Great Lakes Valley Conference as it begins a three-game homestand Sunday to wrap up its conference schedule.

S&T's opponent Sunday will be league leader Maryville, who was ranked just outside the top 25 nationally last week and has already locked up a spot in the conference tournament that will begin Nov. 5.  The Miners, meanwhile, come into the weekend tied with Missouri-St. Louis for seventh place with 13 points, three more than ninth place Quincy.

The Miners, 5-5-3 overall and 4-5-2 in the GLVC, picked up a big road win Friday on Olivia Olson's (Maryville, IL/Edwardsville) second half goal that gave S&T a 1-0 win at Indianapolis.  However, S&T could not find the back of the net on Sunday as a late first half goal was all Lewis needed to hand the Miners a 1-0 loss to keep them in the seventh place tie.

Olson became the fourth Miner to record a second goal on the season with her game-winning tally on Friday, joining Beth Roberts (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty), Amelia Mundo (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) and Ava Hoenes (Columbia, MO/Hickman) in that category.  Roberts leads the Miners with four goals and three assists for 11 points, while Mundo has 10 points on four goals and two assists.

Goalkeeper Anastasia Barcom (St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain) enters the weekend with a 0.95 goals against average and 38 saves in 855 minutes of play; she is currently ranked seventh in the GLVC in goals against and fourth in save percentage at .809.

ABOUT MARYVILLE: The Saints are currently on a seven-game unbeaten streak and vaulted into the lead in the conference standings with 23 points after beating UIndy 3-0 on Sunday.  The Saints have scored a league-high 32 goals, 19 of which have come during their current seven-game run.

Balanced scoring has been a key for Maryville, with Ashlyne Hunt leading the team with five goals and four others – Lexi Gentry, Elsa Nilson-Hurtig, Halle Ezell and Nika Vemdal – all with four goals apiece.  Meanwhile, goalkeeper Gigi Yurevich has the GLVC's third-lowest goals against average of 0.64.
