ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's women's soccer team looks to hold onto its spot among the top eight teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference as it heads to the road for the final time in conference play this weekend for two contests.
The Miners, who are currently tied for seventh with Missouri-St. Louis with 10 points based on a 3-4-1 GLVC record – they are 4-4-3 overall – will take on Indianapolis Friday at 5 p.m. (Eastern time) before heading to Romeoville, Ill., to meet up with Lewis Sunday at noon.
S&T picked up a 2-1 win over UMSL last Friday, getting goals from
Beth Roberts (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) and
Ava Hoenes (Columbia, MO/Hickman) in the victory, then dropped a tough 1-0 decision Sunday to McKendree with the Bearcat goal coming on a penalty kick in the 20
th minute. With only five games remaining on the schedule, the last three that will be at home, the Miners are in a mix where six points currently separates third place from 11
th – and S&T's two opponents this weekend are the opposite ends of that spectrum.
With her goal last week, Roberts took over the team's scoring lead with 11 points and shares the team lead in goals with
Amelia Mundo (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) with four apiece. Roberts also leads S&T with three assists on the season, while Mundo has two to give her 10 points. Hoenes is the only other Miner with multiple goals as she has tallied two on the year.
Anastasia Barcom (St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain) enters the weekend with a 1.07 goals against average and has recorded 28 saves in 675 minutes.
ABOUT UINDY: The Greyhounds bring a 3-5-3 overall record and 2-3-2 GLVC mark for eight points into Friday's match as they are currently tied for 10
th in the conference standings. UIndy is winless in its last three games (0-2-1) and has won just once in its last six games since beating Southwest Baptist in its conference opener, scoring just twice in that stretch.
Sarah Wegener has three goals and three assists to lead the Greyhounds in the scoring column, while Stephanie Brady has scored twice this season. Kendall Ellis has handled the bulk of the goalkeeping duties and has a 1.45 goals against average.
ABOUT LEWIS: After losing three straight games earlier in the season, the Flyers are unbeaten in their last six contests and come into the weekend at 5-4-3 overall and 4-1-2 in the GLVC. Lewis beat UIndy 1-0 Sunday on a goal by Mariana Pinto, one of four players with at least two goals this season. Elisa Aguilar and Melisa Hadzic have four apiece to lead Lewis, while Bekah Nielsen has a 0.95 goals against average.
