LIBERTY, Mo. – After going without a goal in each of its first three road contests in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, Missouri S&T's women's soccer broke loose for three goals Sunday afternoon as it downed William Jewell 3-1 to win for the second time in conference play.
The Miners (3-3-3, 2-3-1) and Cardinals (0-9, 0-6 GLVC) swapped goals less than two minutes apart midway through the first half before S&T took the lead for good when Beth Roberts (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) redirected a corner kick into the net in the 37th minute.
Lily Chung (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central) started the scoring when put a shot by Jewell goalkeeper Jenna Skeeters in the 22nd minute off an assist from Isabella Hubble (Mascoutah, IL/Mascoutah). But less than two minutes later, the Cardinals knotted the score on a goal by Kim Munoz.
S&T, however, regained the advantage after getting a corner kick opportunity in the 37th minute and converting it, as Andersyn Foster (Belleville, IL/Althoff Catholic) sent a serve to the back post and Roberts was there to put it home and put the Miners in the lead.
The score remained 2-1 until the 69th minute, when Ameila Mundo worked her way through the Jewell defense and launched a shot from about 25 yards away that sailed by Skeeters into the top left corner of the net.
S&T had a 13-7 advantage in shots and had nine on goal to three for the Cardinals, while also getting eight corner kick chances in the contest. Anastasia Barcom (St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain) had two saves in the game for S&T, both of which came in the first half as the Cardinals did not have a shot on net after the intermission.
The three goals were the most the Miners have scored in a GLVC road game in over two seasons, dating back to a Sept. 17, 2021 contest at William Jewell that they won 5-0.
Missouri S&T will return home next weekend for a pair of contests, starting with Friday's 5 p.m. match against Missouri-St. Louis.
