ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's women's soccer team got its first win of the 2022 season on Sunday and will seek back-to-back victories when they host Southwest Baptist Friday to begin a three-game homestand.
The Miners, 1-5-2 overall and 1-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, got goals from
Danielle Hopkins (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) and
Sydney Gratz (Geneva, IL/Geneva) to record a 2-1 win over William Jewell to break into the win column. S&T will look to get its victory on its home turf Friday when it faces SBU at 5 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium, then plays Sunday at the S&T Soccer Field against defending GLVC champion Drury at noon.
Gratz scored in both S&T games last weekend and is the only Miner with multiple goals this season; Hopkins,
Andersyn Foster (Belleville, IL/Althoff Catholic) and
Lauren Bulcroft (Claremore, OK/Verdigris) have also recorded tallies for the Miners, who have scored in each of their last three games after scoring just once in their first five outings of the year.
Viktoria Johnson (Granite City, IL/Granite City) has played 707 minutes in goal this season and has a 1.78 goals against average with 28 saves.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: Southwest Baptist enters play this weekend at 1-4-3 overall and 0-2-2 in the GLVC as it has gone winless in its last four contests. The Bearcats played just once last week and lost that game by a count of 2-0 to Drury.
Abby Harrison has scored three times and leads SBU with seven points overall, while five other Bearcats have scored once. Goalkeeper Ashlynn Edison has posted a goals against average of 1.61 and has made 45 saves in eight games.
Drury's win over SBU was followed by its first loss in GLVC play as the Panthers dropped a 2-0 contest Sunday to Rockhurst. Sunday's game was the first all season that the Panthers allowed a goal in, as they have outscored their opponents by an 11-2 margin as part of their 5-1-3 start to the season (2-1-2 GLVC).
Elsa Gonzalez has two goals and an assist for five points to pace Drury in the scoring department, while Tara Simon and Melissa Schneider have two goals apiece. Kaitlin Knetzke has made 31 saves in her 810 minutes of action with a league-best 0.22 goals against average.
