LIBERTY, Mo. – Missouri S&T got first half goals from
Danielle Hopkins (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) and
Sydney Gratz (Geneva, IL/Geneva) and held off William Jewell in the second half to pick up its first victory of the 2022 campaign and for head coach
Jane Grimley-Gunn, as the Miners topped the Cardinals 2-1 Sunday in a Great Lakes Valley Conference women's soccer match.
Hopkins scored an unassisted goal in the 10
th minute as the Cardinals tried to clear a ball out of their end, but it ended up at the feet of Hopkins about 25 yards away and she hit her shot out of a crowd past Jewell goalkeeper Katie Wagenheim.
The Miners (1-5-2, 1-4 GLVC) added to their advantage in the 34
th minute when
Andersyn Foster (Belleville, IL/Althoff Catholic) played a ball off the end line that was backheeled by
Olivia Olson (Maryville, IL/Edwardsville) to Gratz, who hit a left-footed shot under a diving Wagenheim to make it 2-0.
William Jewell (1-7-1, 0-4-1 GLVC) got one of the goals back in the 59
th minute of play when S&T goalkeeper
Viktoria Johnson (Granite City, IL/Granite City) was unable to secure a long shot attempt by Kate Lawrence, allowing Corrine Hughes to get to the loose ball and push the rebound past her.
The Cardinals, however, did not have another shot on net after the Hughes goal; their best chances came in the 72
nd minute when Lawrence hit a direct free kick over the top of the net and in the 88
th minute when Megan GIffin took a shot from about 30 yards out that also sailed over the goal.
S&T had a 13-11 advantage in shots and had eight on goal to Jewell's five. Johnson finished with four saves in the contest.
Missouri S&T will return home for its next three contests, beginning with Friday's 5 p.m. match against Southwest Baptist.
