ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T got an early lead in its women's soccer contest Friday against Southwest Baptist at Allgood-Bailey Stadium, but the Bearcats were able to even the score later in the opening half before the teams played to a stalemate for the remainder of the night, as Friday's Great Lakes Valley Conference game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Despite controlling play for the bulk of the contest as they had possession for well over half of the game, the Miners (1-5-3, 1-4-1 GLVC) were only able to get a first half goal from
Ashley Haag (Keller, TX/Keller Central) as she drilled in a shot from about 30 yards away off a pass from
Andersyn Foster (Belleville, IL/Althoff Catholic) in the seventh minute.
The Bearcats (1-4-4, 0-2-3 GLVC), however, got a chance to draw even when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 31
st minute. Abby Harrison converted the penalty kick to tie the game, then the game turned into a defensive battle for the remainder of the night.
S&T had some good scoring chances in the second half as
Danielle Hopkins (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) and
Sydney Gratz (Geneva, IL/Geneva) both had opportunities early in the half and
Lexi Frederick (Warrenton, MO/Warrenton) had a chance on a rebound in the 75
th minute that was stopped by SBU goalkeeper Ashlynn Edison.
Miner goalie
Viktoria Johnson (Granite City, IL/Granite City) finished with one save in goal as she stopped a try by Harrison in the 61
st minute.
Missouri S&T will host Drury Sunday at noon at the S&T Soccer Field.
