KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Missouri S&T's women's soccer team tried to rally late on Friday night, but came up a goal short as Rockhurst came away with a 2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory.
The Miners (0-5-2, 0-4 GLVC) cut a two-goal Hawk lead in half when
Sydney Gratz (Geneva, IL/Geneva) scored in the 85
th minute off an assist from
Danielle Hopkins (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley), as she ripped a long distance shot that went off the hands of Rockhurst goalkeeper Taylor James. However, the Miners were unable to get another shot over the final five minutes of play.
Rockhurst (4-1-2, 3-0 GLVC) scored early in each half, getting its first tally in the ninth minute on a penalty kick by Lizzo Rosenthal and in the 61
st minute in the second half on a goal by Anna Lantz.
The Hawks had a 19-5 advantage in shots in the contest and had 10 on goal to one for S&T, the one being the goal by Gratz in the second half.
Viktoria Johnson (Granite City, IL/Granite City) had six saves in 77-plus minutes of action, while
Natalie Newman (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) had two stops in over 12 minutes in her first game action of the season.
S&T will return to action Sunday when it takes on William Jewell at noon in Liberty, Mo.
