QUINCY, Ill. – Missouri S&T got the first goal of Sunday's women's soccer match against Quincy, but the Hawks tied the game a short time later and then got the winning goal late in the contest to hand the Miners a 2-1 loss in the Great Lakes Valley Conference match.
Ella Wolfard scored in the 86
th minute to break the tie and hand the Miners their third loss in any games in GLVC play. That came after the two teams tallied goals just 18 seconds apart early in the second half.
S&T (0-4-2, 0-3 GLVC) got on the board first at the 58:07 mark when
Lauren Bulcroft (Claremore, OK/Verdigris) scored an unassisted goal as she put a shot into the upper left corner of the net past QU goalkeeper Julia Mincher. But the Hawks (1-3-3, 1-1-1 GLVC) answered right back as Jessica Felix got a shot by S&T's
Viktoria Johnson (Granite City, IL/Granite City) a few seconds after the restart to knot the score.
The Miners had a couple of good scoring chances with about 10 minutes to go, getting two free kicks along the way. Shortly after the second one,
Sydney Gratz's (Geneva, IL/Geneva) high shot was hauled in by Mincher.
Wolfard's game-winning goal came after a free kick near midfield that was sent into the box; Wolfard got to the free ball and redirected a low shot into the net to put the Hawks into the lead.
The Miners outshot the Hawks 15-12 and had an 11-5 advantage in the second half, including eight shots on net. Johnson finished with eight saves for S&T.
Missouri S&T will be on the road for both of its contests next weekend, starting with Friday's 5 p.m. game against Rockhurst in Kansas City, Mo.
