INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Back in action for one game Saturday, the Missouri S&T baseball team lined up opposite Indianapolis for game two of the weekend at Greyhound Park, playing on the campus of UIndy for the first time since 2015. Despite allowing a run early, the Miners (14-14, 3-7) came back to lead and did so by as much as four in the late going, but big innings by the Greyhounds (13-15, 7-3) late proved to be the difference as the home team took game two 14-8.
Like in Friday's opener, UIndy scored first in the game on an RBI groundout in their first at bats of the afternoon to take the early lead.
S&T capitalized on three Greyhound errors in the top of the second to tie things up as
Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette) scored on a throwing error on a ball off the bat of
Brady Voss (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty).
Dakota Sill (Lansing, KS/Lansing) put the Miners on top an inning later as he came across on a wild pitch after leading off the inning with a single.
A scoreless fourth saw the team trade runs in the fifth. The Miners made it 3-1 when
Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) singled to right field to bring home
Michael Hughes (St. Clair, MO/St. Clair) after he too opened the inning with a single. UIndy answered with a run on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the inning to keep it a one-run game.
Missouri S&T pushed their lead back to two in the sixth as Voss was able to score from third on a passed ball on a strikeout by
Aaron Berkhoff (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain).
The Miners added two more runs in the top of the seventh when
Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette) worked a bases-loaded walk to force home Sill before Voss plated
Tommy Ruether (Washington, MO/Washington) on a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.
Unfortunately for S&T, UIndy posted a big inning in the bottom of the seventh, as the first six men to the plate all reached base, with five coming around to score and make it 7-6 before S&T was able to escape the inning on three groundouts induced by
Elijah Gross (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit West). The Greyhounds went on to score seven more runs in the eighth to push their lead to 14-6.
The Miners tried to rally in the ninth as Wood reached on an error to lead off the inning before coming around to score on Weiner's seventh home run of the year to make it 14-8. S&T managed two more baserunners in the inning but a comeback bid was not in the cards as UIndy was able to record the final three outs to take game two.
Wood finished the day 2-5 at the plate with two RBI while Weiner drove in three and worked two walks while also scoring twice. Voss finished 1-3 with two RBI as eight different Miners found the hit column in the game.
Cade Meier (Dakota, IL/Dakota) started the game and took a no decision, working six plus innings as he started the seventh but handed things off to the bullpen after opening the frame with four straight baserunners. Meier struck out a pair and allowed nine hits in the game.
David Kephart (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest) (0-2) was tagged with the loss as he was the first man out of the bullpen and allowed the go-ahead run in his appearance.
The series will wrap up Sunday with a pair of seven inning contests set to start at 11 A.M. CT.
