ROLLA, Mo. – After playing their last 14 games at the friendly confines of home, the Missouri S&T baseball team will take to the road for nine of their next 10 games starting Tuesday evening with non-conference action against Missouri Southern before resuming Great Lakes Valley Conference action this weekend against Indianapolis in a four-game series.
The Miners (14-11, 3-5) are coming off just their second series loss of the season, as they dropped three of four over the weekend to Lewis. S&T's lone win of the weekend came in game one of Saturday's doubleheader by a score of 3-2 behind a two run blast from
Brady Voss (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) and six strong innings from
Cade Meier (Dakota, IL/Dakota).
Meier picked up his third win of the season and spots a 2.70 ERA in 23 1/3 innings of work with 20 strikeouts.
Dylan Mollett (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) was took his first loss of the season in the series but is 3-1 with a 4.20 Era in six starts and has worked 30 innings and struck out 33 batters, both of which are team highs. Freshman
Ethan Morrow (Lenexa, KS/Shawnee Mission West) is 1-1 on the season and has made five starts in six games on the mound and has 22 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings.
Elijah Gross (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit West) recorded save number two of the season in the win and has made a team-leading nine appearances for 20 innings ad sports a 2-1 record and a 2.70 ERA with 19 strikeouts.
Chasen Anderson's (Moscow Mills, MO/Troy Buchanan) three saves lead the team and has struck out 13 in 11 2/3 innings in eight appearances.
At the plate,
Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette) continues to lead the team with a .384 average, five home runs and two triples and has driven in 22 while slugging .674.
Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) saw his 13-game hitting streak end in the series finale Sunday but is still hitting .373 with three home runs and 17 RBI. Voss, who is hitting .315 this season, leads the team with 25 RBI and blasted his fourth home run of the season in the win Saturday.
Tommy Ruether (Washington, MO/Washington),
Dakota Sill (Lansing, KS/Lansing), the team leader in stolen bases with 15, and
Braden Mahurin (Dixon, MO/Dixon) are all other regulars hitting better than .300.
Missouri Southern (22-12, 16-5 MIAA) has won four-straight and is coming off a weekend shutout of Fort Hayes State and have outscored their opponents 46-2 during that span.
Tommy Stevenson is batting .409 with 13 home runs and 36 RBI this season and has 23 extra base hits as well, while five other regulars are hitting over .310 for the Lions. Henry Kusiak is hitting .371 with seven home runs and 31 RBI, Nate Mieszkowski and Clay Milas are each hitting .333 with four home runs between them and the latter leading the way with 10 stolen bases. Matt Miller checks in hitting .331 with 12 home runs and a team-high 40 RBI while Jordan Fitzpatrick has a .312 average with five home runs and has driven in 31.
Five pitchers have made double-figure appearances for MSSU this season, led by Scott Duensing (0-3) with 19 games totaling 15 2/3 innings with a 4.60 ERA and 18 strikeouts. Cale McCallister (2-0, 1.73 ERA, 26 IP, 24 K) and Ryan Paschall (0-1, 2.95 ERA, 18.1 IP, 19 K) have 18 appearances each while Laif Hultine (1-2, 4.50 ERA, 22 IP, 23 K) has seen time in 15 games and Jeremiah Kennedy (1-0, 5.30 ERA, 18.2 IP, 23 K) has made 13 appearances. Cole Gayman (5-1, 3.66 ERA, 19.2 IP, 26 K) and Chase Beiter (1-1, 8.64 ERA, 25 IP, 24 K) also may see action Tuesday, having combined for 16 appearances and nine starts between them.
Indianapolis (11-15, 5-3) is coming off a series win at Truman State over the weekend to snap a four-game slide and split a doubleheader with Purdue Northwest Tuesday. The Greyhounds playing their first home games since March 15 this weekend when S&T comes to town.
Two-way player Brandon DeWitt leads the team with a .364 average with four extra base hits and 12 RBI while Armen Torosian is hitting .348 and is tied for the team lead with four home runs and has driven in 14. Drew Donaldson is the final regular hitting over .300 at .310 and is tied for the team lead in stolen bases (9) and runs batted in (17). Caleb Vaughn also has four home runs and nine stolen bases and is hitting .278 while Zack Williams has gone deep three times and also has 17 RBI while hitting .220. Alex Vela, who has started 14 games, is hitting .327 with six extra base hits, nine RBI and eight stolen bases.
Xavier Rivas, who has already been named GLVC Pitcher of the Week several times this season, leads UIndy on the hill with a 4-0 record and a 1.43 ERA and 71 strikeouts, a top 10 mark nationally, in 44 innings this season. DeWitt is 1-1 in three starts this season with a 3.74 ERA and has worked 21 2/3 innings this season and struck out a season-high three in seven innings against Truman last weekend. Logan Peterson is second on the team with 29 strikeouts and is 2-2 with a 5.72 ERA in 28 1/3 innings but also has 10 wild pitches this season. Blake Sargent has a 3.24 ERA in five relief appearances while Mitchell Bundy and Wyatt Phillips have each made six relief appearances and combined for 14 1/3 innings of work.
All-time against Missouri Southern, S&T is 15-50-1 and has lost the last four in the series, including both games last season at the GLVC/MIAA Crossover 7-6 and 14-1. S&T's last win was a 2-0 decision in Rolla in 2018 while the last win in Joplin came in S&T's days a member of the MIAA, a 5-3 game in 2004.
Against UIndy, the Miners are 10-16 all-time and split last season's four game series at Grand Park, winning 8-7 and 3-2 before dropping a pair of 7-4 decisions.
