ROLLA, Mo. – Back at home for a quick stopover between weekend road trips, the Missouri S&T baseball team wrapped up the season series with Maryville Tuesday afternoon at the Ballpark at S&T. Despite taking an early lead in the game, the Miners (16-15) couldn't keep the visitors at bay as the Saints (18-15) rattled off 13 straight runs at one point and withstood a push in the late innings from S&T to win 13-9.
Following a scoreless top of the first, the Miners struck first when
Braden Mahurin (Dixon, MO/Dixon) singled down the line in right field with bases loaded to plate a pair.
Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette) scored moments later on a wild pitch and after a
Cole Hampton (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) walk loaded the bases,
Aaron Berkhoff (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain) coaxed a free pass of his own to force home a run before
Dakota Sill (Lansing, KS/Lansing) singled back through the box to plate
Brady Voss (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) to make it a 5-0 game.
Maryville scored three runs with two outs in the second on a bases loaded walk of their own before a two-run single cut the lead to 5-3. The Saints plated four runs in the third to go on top 7-5 before going on to score one in the fourth, three more in the fifth and two in the sixth inning in a reversal of fortune for the Miners as they found themselves trailing 13-5.
Voss blasted his fifth home run of the season with one out in the bottom of the inning as the Miners looked to rally over the final innings. Two more runs scored in the seventh when
Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) narrowly missed leaving the yard for the third time in three games as he doubled off the wall in center to plate Sill and make it 13-7. Two more runs came in the eighth when
Chase Burgess (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley West) came off the bench to single home
Jaden Courtois (Festus, MO/Jefferson) who also reach base with a one-out pinch hit single. A bases-loaded walk from Wood forced home
Andrew Branson (St. James, MO/St. James) and bring the tying run to the plate in the person of
Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette), but Maryville escaped the huge inning with an infield pop-up to keep it 13-9.
A scoreless top of the ninth set up S&T for a potential rally in the bottom of the inning, but it was not to be as despite getting a two-out baserunner, the Saints closed out the marathon three our and fifty-five minute affair for the win.
Sill led the way at the plate with a 3-5 game while Mahurin finished 2-3 with two runs batted in. Voss and Wood each went 1-3 with three walks while four other Miners recorded a hit in the game, including Courtois, Branson and Burgess who all collected singles off the bench in the game.
Treyton Ruth (Rolla, MO/Rolla) (0-1) was charged with the loss in the game, allowing four runs in an inning of work in relief of starter
Elijah Gross (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit West), who worked an inning and two thirds and was charged with three runs on three hits.
Matt Ellingson (Lenexa, KS/Olathe Northwest) struck out three and allowed a run in an inning and a third in his appearance, while
David Kephart (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest) returned to form and worked three scoreless innings of relief and allowed just three hits as the sixth and final arm of the day for the Miners.
Kyle Athmer (Breese, IL/Breese Central Community) and
Scott Henrich (West Bend, WI/West Bend) also saw action in the game and worked an inning each.
Missouri S&T will be back on the road starting Friday at Wisconsin Parkside, with a doubleheader beginning at 12 P.M. from Historic Simmons Field in Kenosha.
