SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Drury used a four-run inning in both games of Sunday's doubleheader to take control of the Great Lakes Valley Conference contests against Missouri S&T's softball team and took both games of the twinbill, winning 7-1 and 7-2 at Thompson Field. The losses dropped the Miners to 16-14 on the season and to 6-4 in the GLVC.
Game 1: Drury 7, Miners 1
The Panthers (23-8, 9-1 GLVC) broke on top in the third on an RBI single off the bat of Kailyne Luna, then tagged the Miners for four runs in the fifth to break the contest open. The inning began when Megan Parsley was hit by a pitch, then Drury scored its four runs on four consecutive RBI hits to make it a 5-0 game.
S&T got on the scoreboard in the sixth when
Elizabeth Viox (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) reached on an infield single and advanced to second on an infield hit by
Ashley Davis (Erie, Ill./Erie), then moved to third on a passed ball and scored on
Shannon Flowers' (Katy, Texas/Katy) ground out. Drury, however, added two more runs in the bottom half of the sixth.
Viox had two of the Miners' four hits as the Panthers outhit S&T 9-4. Starting pitcher
Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) took the loss in the circle.
Game 2: Drury 7, Miners 2
Just like in the opener, Drury got a run to take the lead and then got its four-run inning to take a commanding lead in the nightcap. The Panthers got the lead in the second when a wild pitch by S&T starter
Julia Kanoy (Hamilton, Mo./Penney) scored Gena Kulberg, then tallied four in the third, highlighted by Rylee Kolb's two-run single.
The Miners got a run back in the fourth when
Emma Vaughn (Pevely, Mo./Herculaneum) reached on an error with one out, then moved to second on
Chloe Saltijeral's (North Aurora, Ill./Rosary) two-out single and crossed the plate on a hit by
Baylee Jobson (Marceline, Mo./Marceline RV). Drury would score twice in the bottom of the fourth before S&T closed the scoring in the seventh when a sacrifice fly by Wooldridge scored
Hannah Antzoulatos (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy).
Saltijeral had two hits for S&T in the second game as each team finished with six hits. Kanoy, who pitched into the fourth, took the loss for the Miners.
Missouri S&T will host Lincoln Tuesday in a doubleheader at the S&T Softball Field beginning at 1 p.m.
