ROLLA, Mo. – Six members of Missouri S&T's swimming team have been selected to compete at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships, which will begin March 9 in Greensboro, N.C.
The selections includes two –
Andy Huffman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) and
Noah Clancy (Alton, IL/Alton) – who competed at the national meet last season and a third in
Alex Graham (Parker, TX/Homeschooled) who competed at the 2020 NCAA championship meet. The other three will be first-time national competitors as
Martin Melinder (Upplands Vasby, Sweden),
Jay Mercer (Kansas City, MO/Whitefield Academy) and
Connor Wiedemeier (West Monroe, LA/West Monroe) landed berths to the NCAA meet.
Huffman will be making his fourth appearance at the NCAA Division II Championships, where he has already earned 10 All-America awards in his career. Huffman earned marks in the 200-yard butterfly where he had a top mark of 1:47.59, the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 3:53.77 and in the 200-yard breaststroke, where he finished third a year ago. Huffman has a top time of 1:58.69 in the 200-breaststroke, which is the 14
th-best in Division II, while his mark in the 400-IM is also ranked 14
th and in the 200-butterfly is 16
th-best.
Clancy earned his spot on the national team in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke, where he finished among the top 16 nationally during his freshman season last year. Clancy recorded times of 47.91 seconds in the 100-backstroke and 1:46.31 in the 200-backstroke during the 2021-22 season which rank 15
th and 20
th in NCAA Division II, respectively.
Graham finished ninth in the 1,000-yard freestyle at the 2020 NCAA Championships before the meet was halted during the second day due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He had a time of 9:18.64 in the event this season, while Melinder – who also qualified in the 1,000-free – had the Miners' best time of the year in that event of 9:17.85. Melinder has the 18
th-fastest time in Division II this year, while Graham's time currently ranks 20
th.
Mercer will compete in the 200-yard breaststroke along with Huffman and earned his spot based on his time of 1:59.32 this season that is ranked 16
th nationally. Wiedemeier also landed his first national berth in the 200-yard freestyle, where he had his best time of the year of 1:37.33 at the GLVC Championships earlier this month that is the 19
th-best in Division II this season.
The Miners will also compete in all of the relay events at the national meet.
