ROLLA, Mo. – With winning performances in nine of the 11 events Thursday afternoon, Missouri S&T opened its swimming season with a 136.5-68.5 dual meet victory over William Jewell at the S&T Pool.
The Miners got two winning efforts from
Aidan Walters (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) on Thursday, as he won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.96 and later took first in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.83 seconds as well as from
Noah Clancy (Alton, IL/Alton), as he grabbed firsts in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.71 seconds and in the 100-yard backstroke, where he recorded a time of 50.98 seconds.
S&T also received winning efforts from
Martin Melinder (Upplands Vasby, Sweden/) in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:00.78,
Connor Bichsel (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit West) in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:14.20,
Nate Baxter (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) in the 100-butterfly in 51.14 seconds and
Jordan Christensen (Coralville, IA/Iowa West) in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.69 seconds as the Miners' top three finishers all finished with times under one minute.
Missouri S&T won the 200-yard medley relay behind the team of Clancy, Christensen, Baxter and
Connor Wiedemeier (West Monroe, LA/West Monroe) in a time of 1:33.84, while the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Walters,
Nolan Fergus (Aurora, IL/Marmion Academy),
Mark Cavanaugh (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista) and Bichsel finished second in 1:28.90.
Second place finishes were recorded by
Daniel Matlock (Peoria, IL/Richwoods) in the 400-IM in 4:17.09, Gabe Porter in the 100-butterfly in 52.91 seconds, Cavanaugh in the 100-backstroke in 53.15 seconds, Melinder in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:53.48 and Bichsel in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.36 seconds.
S&T got third place showings from
Lane Werth (Wichita, KS/Wichita North) in the 1,000-freestyle in 10:06.61,
Cameron McCrary (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) in the 200-freestyle in 1:46.43, Melinder in the 400-IM in 4:18.36, Fergus in the 100-butterfly in 53.36 seconds, Porter in the 100-back in 54 seconds flat and Baxter in the 100-breaststroke in 59.41 seconds.
William Jewell's only event wins in the meet came in the 500-yard freestyle, where Eric Hart edged Melinder by under a second and in the 200-freestyle relay.
Missouri S&T's next competition will take place at the McKendree Invitational on Oct. 21 in Lebanon, Ill.
