ST. LOUIS, Mo. – A miscue on the Miners' end of the field led to the only goal of the game Sunday afternoon, as Maryville downed Missouri S&T's women's soccer team 1-0 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match.
Sunday's match was scoreless until the 77
th minute, when a ball was sent into the S&T end with Miner goalkeeper
Viktoria Johnson (Granite City, IL/Granite City) and a player from each team in pursuit just outside the penalty area. The S&T players collided and went to the ground while the Maryville player, Gina Catanzaro was able to stay on her feet and scored into an open net for the only tally of the contest.
The Miners, who were outshot by a 10-7 margin, had a penalty kick opportunity in the first half, but Saint goalkeeper Katie Nash stopped the attempt by
Andersyn Foster (Belleville, IL/Althoff Catholic). The Miners had three shots in the second half, but all three were off target or blocked by the Maryville defense. The best of those chances came from
Lily Chung (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central) with less than three minutes to play, as she beat Nash to a loose ball but hit her shot just wide of the net.
Johnson was credited with four saves for S&T, who dropped to 2-7-4 on the year and 2-6-2 in the GLVC. Maryville remained unbeaten in GLVC play at 6-0-5 and is 8-2-5 overall.
The Miners will conclude their home schedule next weekend, beginning with a Friday game against Lewis at 5 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
