ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T women's soccer team continues Great Lakes Valley Conference play this weekend with two matches, heading to Liberty to take on William Jewell Friday at 5 P.M. before returning to Rolla to host Truman State at 12 P.M.
The Miners (1-2-0, 0-1-0) dropped a hard-fought match on the road against Quincy in the conference opener for both teams, scoring first to take the early lead on goals from
Lily Chung (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central) and
Melanie Kulig (Belleville, IL/Belleville West) before the Hawks scored three times in the first 20 minutes of the second half to take a 3-2 lead.
Sydney Gratz (Geneva, IL/Geneva) netted the equalizer with under 15 minutes to go an a beautiful shot from nearly 25 yards out, but Quincy managed to score twice under a minute in the closing moments to eke out a 5-3 win.
Gratz is the Miners' leading goal scorer, scoring her second of the season against QU and also recorded an assist in that match as well. Kulig also has an assist to go with her goal this season, while Chung,
Ally Hasken (Freeport, IL/Freeport) and
Paige VanDaele (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central) have also found the net for S&T this season.
Kristin Steins (Ballwin, MO/Parkway South) made her second start of the year in goal Sunday and recorded a season-high five saves against 26 shots faced and enters the weekend with 10 in three matches and a 2.93 GAA.
Viktoria Johnson (Granite City, IL/Granite City) has also seen action in a pair of games and has five saves against nine shots faced and a 2.00 GAA.
William Jewell (0-3-1. 0-1-0) is also coming off a loss in their GLVC opener over the weekend, dropping a 1-0 decision to Southwest Baptist at home. The Cardinals are still looking for their first win of the season, dropping their first two matches to Washburn and Rogers State before playing Missouri Southern to a draw in Joplin on September 9. Paige Liston has the lone goal this season while Katie Kamies has an assist. Kaylie Kappelmann has been the primary netminder for William Jewell, making three starts and recording 27 save against 55 shots faced and posting a 0.93 GAA. Katie Wagenheim also has made a stat and has five saves against 19 shots faced and a 2.00 GAA.
Truman State (1-2-0, 0-1-0) takes on Maryville Friday afternoon before continuing down I-44 to Rolla for Sunday's match. Like the Miners and Cardinals, the Bulldogs also fell in their GLVC opener at home against Drury by a score of 1-0. Truman State split a pair of matches in Michigan to open their season, falling 3-1 to Saginaw Valley State before shutting out Davenport 4-0.
Faith Branson leads the offense with three goals and an assist, while Nickey Hanna has the other two goals and an assist as well. Cassidy Gann and Emmie McConnell also have an assist each for Truman through three matches. Beth Hopwood has seen the majority of minutes for Truman State in goal, making 12 saves against 41 shots and posting a 1.56 GAA, while Tatumn Damron has made two saves against three shots.
Last spring, S&T fell in the season opener on the road against Truman State 1-0 in double overtime before playing William Jewell to a 1-1 draw, also in double overtime, in Rolla just two days later. S&T's last win over the Cardinals came on October 4 during the 2019 season by a score of 1-0 in Rolla, while the last Miner win over the Bulldogs came in Kirksville on October 7 in the 2018 season, again by a score of 1-0.
